Still waiting for my rule book from BSJA (sent to wrong address).
So can anyone tell me what rules there are regarding spur size / design? Specifically what is NOT allowed?

There are rules....but i haven't got them in front of me....and i don't think they're terribly strict

Pretty much anything goes from what i've seen around

Definitely smaller than 1" but bigger than they appear in pic.

I have been using them in training and was advised to use them when competing aswell.
Only real prob is i sound like John Wayne when I walk around...clink clink clink.

Derby House probably sell them aswell. Olney saddlery is now owned by them. Might be worth trying their website.

We stock both the rowel versions

I am hoping to compete BSJA in the smooth rowels, however I thought the rule was 1cm diameter and these are slightly larger (closer to 1.5cm)

Hello!

Sorry to jump in on the post, but I have never used rowelled spurs and always use blunt-ended ones.

Would guys tell me how different they feel to you and how they affect your horses?

Thanks

No necks over 3 cms

No spurs wth necks set on the insde of the heel

No spurs wth rowel diameters in excess of 1cm

No spurs wth roughened, cutting edges and serrated spurs, wth or without necks

God, 1cm isnt big at ALL IMHO

Smooth rowels are kinder than a blunt ended spur, as when applied they roll over the skin rather than dig in.

Pointed rowels vary depending on the individual rowel, but the dressage type ones also roll over the skin, but are slighly harsher.

The prince of wales spurs (i.e. bog standard english spurs), are IMHO the worst ones to use, as they dig in and causes bruising very easily. I've tried them on my arm, and decided the smooth rowel are definitely the most humane.

Ok as I have the AWA spurs to hand:

Top in picture = 2cm round rowel

So technically illegal for BSJA - but that is madness as a smaller smooth rowel won't disperse the pressure?

Where do you stand on the "training" spurs with the little rubber/plastic ball on the end. Any good??? I have seen a few people with them, but don't know where to buy?

If I have to wear spurs I much prefer to wear rowels!

So, are we in agreement then that the AWA smooth rowels are BSJA legal? F so, Cotswold SJ can you send me a PM with price please

remember diameter is only half the width of the rowel though so you technically allowed 2cm across in total

Ermmm. I don't think so....

Radius is half the diameter

Ok the official word from the BSJA is:

1. they would have to see the spurs
2. it would be down to the individual event judge

So I think that certainly with the smooth rowel you could prove that they are kinder than blunt end 'normal' spurs and the judge may let you compete with them.

I doubt most judges would even notice tbh

And as you say, the larger the rowel, the kinder they should be...in theory anyways.
