Running backwards - how to stop it?

My new lad has just started running backwards when we're out. The thing is he isn't doing it when he doesn't want to go past something, he is doing it when we're standing still. Three times yesterday he did it when we had stopped to talk to someone. We were only standing for a few minutes at a time, not a half an hour.

I think he is just impatient type of horse as he will paw the ground a lot in the yard, but I think it is bad manners and I'd like to nip it in the bud. I don't want to have to keep him moving, turning or walking, I would just like him to stand and relax. There is no hopping about beforehand.

When he did it I leant back, gave him the reins and gave him a kick and he would go forward but as soon as we had stopped and stood still, he did it again.

I am hoping to introduce him to cubbing this autumn and as there is so much standing around, I would like to try and get this resolved beforehand.

Any suggestions very gratefully received. Thanks

No suggestions but I'd be interested in what everyone else has to say - mine's also a fidget when he's out which makes it very difficult when you're waiting at the level crossing with a bus sat behind you!!:D

Mine also does this sometimes. He can go pretty fast in reverse! I give the reins and kick on but usually he than tries to turn so I circle him. Maybe you could try circling him straight away?

My old TB will not stand still out on a hack if I stop to talk to someone, especially if we're on our way home. He just circles & fidgets or will walk backwards, not run.

Out cubbing he's an angel & is happy to stand as he's not on his way home.

However, had another impatient TB who wouldn't stand out cubbing either. Good luck!

Hi stand him in front of a very large prickly hedge;) I read it in an old riding book years ago to stop napping it sounds a bit cruel though:eek:
