has anyone else had this... and what did you do....

went x c schooling to day and when we got to the ditch, well sort of a ditch,
or anything else that he doesn't like the look off, he just puts the breaks on and runs backwards. with no care what he is backing into or over or down.

i have tried pushing him forwards but that just makes him go backwards further.
have tried dropping all contact, still goes backwards...
have tried smacking too but still the same..

when we did finally get over ditch, i repeated it over a few times with no more problems like everything else... eerrrhhh.. so what was all the fuss about.....

he also sometimes does it out hacking. when he does it then i have to turn him round quick but still going backwards if you know what i mean , so he is then going backwards past the thing he didn't like.

saddle, back, teeth all fine.
i know its just being naughty but how do i break the habit..

any info please...

I had this problem a while ago, pretty scary, doing the getting him to walk backwards but in the right direction helped a lot, and going backwards for a long long time too, until well after he's bored of going backwards, persevere.

Other horse did it once, backed into a noisy gate and cured himself!

Mine does the same goes backwards and will then plant. When asked to go forwards will go backwards instead. What helps is going round in very small circles. He realizes very quickly that moving backwards is not a good idea as he ends up going round in small circles and will then go forwards. I have tried reining him back in the direction that he does not want to go does not work.

thanks,
i will try the circle bit and see what happens.
he will go backwards thou past the area that he did not want to go past in the first place... his so busy going backwards that he does not realise that his gone past .
