Ideas pls! I've just started riding a lovely TB, only the third time I've ridden her today so we're still getting to know each other.

She's very responsive and today we did lots of transitions but when I ask for canter she's just speeding up her trot. I've made sure her trots not too quick and I've given her half halts but to no avail.

I'm wondering if I'm slightly un-balanced and because she's sensitive she's getting confused. I've got a lesson with my RI a week wednesday so know he'll help but in the meantime any ideas??!!

I decided to forget the canter today and we just walked on our other paces :-)

Mint bubbly chocolate for any ideas xx

What have you tried so far?

My tip that worked for me was setting down a ground pole and asking for the transition over that, sometimes it's enough to focus everyone on that one moment and they move off into the canter without falling into it.

Is she young?
Sometimes youngsters are taught to canter by being asked to trot faster until they have to change up for canter. Maybe this is what she is trying to do?

I wouldn't totally disregard that quirky, if that was how she was taught and then allowed to do, then that may be the problem?

I find when rushing canter transitions through trot to either
A) slight flexion to the outside, sitting tall an not allowing my hands to slip forwards (bad habit, oops) or
B) asking for it from walk, although this can sometimes go any way but the planned way, especially if the canter isn't established.
