RUNNING MARTINGALE USED AS STANDING MARTINGALE

What is the general opinion about running martingales being used as standing martingale (ie the rings put on the noseband) for 'schooling' ie towards dressage. I was under the impression it was a 'no-no' but can't seem to find any evidence....

I can't see the problem myself, for a short term solution if the length is adjusted accordingly why not? Especially as most people seem to have running martingales in their armouries but often not standing ones. If you want to be really safety conscious I suppose you could tie the rings together so that they don't slip sideways, I've never done that though.
 
I don't and wouldn't do it for school, whats the point? But do do it for riding and leading as Hattie the ridden horse will try to attack the lead horse and this helps to stop her.
 
I have no problem at all with using a running martingale as you describe. Not quite sure why you would want to school in it if the horse isn't generally ridden in one though?
 
thanks everyone for valuable input - I agree - I can't see the point in schooling in one as feel horse will end up leaning upwards on it in effort to resist - totally defeats object - not my idea hence seeking other opinions!

Are you asking whether you could use a standing martingale (of any make or type) for schooling, or if you could use a running martingale as a standing martingale?
I don't know much about standing martingales having never used one myself, but my boss used to use a running martingale on one of her RS ponies as a standing - she taped the bits of leather together and ran the noseband through the rings. I don't see there is much of a safety issue (please prod me if I'm wrong!) so I imagine it would be fine. Not particularly aesthetic though!
 
Personally I don't have a problem with using a running martingale as a standing by putting noseband through the rings, have done it before and no doubt will do it again in the future.

As for schooling in a standing, again I don't have a problem with this, obviously down to the individual horse but personally I hate schooling in a running martingale as I find it interfears with my direct contact with the horses mouth. If a horses is going to fling it's head around I'd rather it had a standing on than a running.
