Dear all

We've got an 8 year old bitch parsons terrier who we've had since a pup. This year - for the very first time - is suffering runny eyes during the summer. It's like clear water and never coloured.

We spoke to the vet (she needed her vaccinations the other day) and he was reluctant to give us any medication. He felt that steroids wouldn't help.

I feel that it's a pollen allergy of some kind (it came on roughly the same time as hubby's hay fever) so we went ahead and tried piriton. This has made hardly any difference, perhaps very marginally......

Any ideas ?

Thank you
Emma

straight off I would use boric acid eye solution each day, just pour onto a cotton eye pad and gently wash along her inner eyelids...this will ensure her eye is clean.
I'd also use a gentle eye drop. Eg camomile solution ....or isomar,a gentle saline type wash is also excellent..
My small schnauzer used to get reddened eyelids and it was from the dust on the country roads where we walk..this isomar has flushed her eyes and she's back to normal..

Running eyes can also be due to food allergies...have you changed her diet recently?

You could have your dog allergy tested if you think it's caused by pollen...we did the Elisa test for food intolerance ( for a food intolerant poodle)and it was useful.
They do offer environmental testing too.and this would be for you to consider....cost is around 150 euros over here.

Thank you for the tips. I will look into boric acid eye solution and where to buy it etc.

No, we haven't changed her food or mixer although we give the dogs a "topping" every day which we have changed from chicken to minced beef (solely because one of our other dogs - namely a naughty beagle - often counter surfs and we worried he would eat the chicken bones again)...... :) I don't think this would cause it and also she's had beef before.

May look into allergy testing if nothing else works.

Thanks again
