Hi - am in a major dilemma. When I fed the horses last night my little Welsh A had a very snotty nose, just from the right side, and it is still snotty this morning. She is eating fine and looks normal, no visible swelling on glands or legs, temp fine. However the problem is that we are just about to go away for the New Year with children and everything packed in car (although back tomorrow) so not going to be able to get the vet out until Friday.

My question is whether a snotty nose indicates something bad and I should put my foot down and get the vet now or could it just be a cold/ something minor that can wait 2 days?

If she is unwell should I bring her in? She currently lives out unrugged so there is a part of me saying that she needs to come in where she is warm and away from the other 2. Howeveram slightly concnerned about doing this as she would be in for about 24hrs with no checks (there are automatic drinkers and I would leave a lot of hay for her. She loves being in - so would be quite happy as long as she has hay and water and warmth). Or should I leave her out as she is and wait till Friday until the vet comes??

Arghhhh why do horses choose the most awkward times to be ill?? My OH is glaring away at me at the mere suggestion we dont go away...

it could be a sinus infection if it is snotty on one side only.Has the horse got a raised temperature. If so then Yes she should be brought inside but otherwise probably best left out if that is what she is used to.

Is there someone you trust who could check on her while you are away overnight? that way you could leave her out and if she seems to go downhill then they could bring her in for you and get the vet if needed.

Amazingly when I called the vet he said he could be with me in half an hour so actually its worked out really well - he will check the pony and also do their teeth and annual vacs which were due early Jan anyway. Just hope he doesnt charge me any extra for call out on New Years Eve!!

There should be no extra charge for call out for New Years Eve as it isn't a public holiday, it's just another working day. Tomorrow is a different story though

quick update - vet been, done annual vacs, rasped teeth, general health check on both. All fine except he thinks that the Welshie has a sinus infection so she is on antibiotics now and she can stay out.

Can now toodle off to our friends for New Year with a clear conscience, a treated pony, no vet call out in Jan (unless the sinus infection comes back!) and a happy husband! Hurrah
