5yo RottxGSD ran down a bank with very rutted ground about 2 weeks ago.
Came back extremely lame on off-fore. A lot of initial swelling and non-weight bearing. X-ray confirmed no fractures (xrays incl shoulder and down so covered whole leg and associated joints) anywhere. Soft cast (a la Robert Jones type bandage was applied) and swelling went down so as to be barely noticeable.
At next vet appt, 'dropping' was noted at the fetlock joint when soft cast was removed. Similar to what you would see in a suspensory injury/rupture. Also, far too much movement within the joint. Xray again confirmed no fracture. Leg was re-cast with the hard cast for 10 days.
Ligament damage/rupture suspected - will be scanned in a few days time by ultrasound to have a proper look at the ligament. She is happy with the cast on and will attempt to walk on the leg.
Dog is in a hard cast from elbow down atm and on crate rest. Swelling has totally receded now.
I have never had a dog with an injury like this - vet also says it is very rare. Anyone have any experience with anything like this ?
