Hi
We're looking to buy a starter flock of coloured Ryeland sheep but struggling to find anything in the North Wales or Cheshire areas. Does anyone know of any?
Thanks in advance

Janet and David Shaw in Shropshire have some lovely sheep. We had a couple from them and have been very pleased.

You will find their details on the flock book society page which jrp204 has already posted.

What are you looking for and when would you like to start your flock?

I'm hoping to have my second crop of lambs on the ground in the next couple of months.

You could also check out some of the rare breed shows and sales

There is one at York at the end of April, Melton will be start of September and York again at the start of October. These give you a chance to look at sheep from different vendors.

The Ryeland show and sale is in Ludlow towards the end of August and that's where you will get the most choice!

Careful though, they are very addictive!

We have pedigree Texels and Suffolks, my advice to anyone starting a Pedigree flock, especially if you intend to sell stock for breeding is to go for the best you can afford. Make sure they are not over or undershot in the mouth and they have all the correct points. A bad trait will invariably carry through to the lambs. If you sell at a Breed society sale any animal with bad teeth will be thrown out. All our stock are Maeda Visna accredited which means they can be sold to both MV and non MV flocks.
Sometimes it is better to buy fewer better animals than more porer ones as it will take generations to breed out a bad trait.
