Have any of you guys used rythmn beads. I have been reading up on them and its been mentioned that they help young horses when training maintain a steady rythm and the sound can also help build confidence when they are out hacking. I also like the idea of the sound as I ride barefoot and not everyone hears us coming. Just wondered if they were worth buying or if the are just pointless

i know someone who uses them, like you she has her horse barefoot so it does give a bit more of a 'warning' to others that something/someone is there.

some horses don't like them though so if you could borrow some before buying then would be a good idea!

Ive always thought they were a bit 'hippy'! and overpriced and something that could be made with a bit of string and beads for much less money!

But, maybe worth a try to help with a youngster.

I tend to use a tongue click in time with my pony's (barefoot) footfalls when we are trotting to help maintain the pace.

You could always pop a bicycle bell on the D's of your saddle!

I think they are a harmless bit of fun and if they help you and horse maintain a rhythm then there is nothing to be lost except a few quid!

Now c'mon, just because you have never heard of something does not make it 'hippy'.

Bells and other noisy things are used the world over. Even these days. It works, not on mine, but seen in used effectively the ones you are talkin about OP. I was thinking of getting one once we start to work again... not only that, helps oneself keep a rhythm... :D

I wonder what the farm will think once I'm out there jingling like father xmas lol!!!!

A few quids worth of beads and bells is a great way of entertaining pony club on a wet day, and a lot cheaper than buying readymade!

I have and use them on hacks, though I did get my leg pulled about them mercilessly from my stablemates the first time:rolleyes:.

However, I have found they do keep the pre shoot season pheasants out of our path when we're galloping across the fields which is fantastic!!

I tell people that they must sound like a loading gun:D

Well call me cynical but I build up my lots confidence by talking to them and praising them whilst out on hacks, rather than having them listen to assorted clangs from the beads... They can pick up their rhythm from the sound of my voice repeating the same thing over and over again eg. nice - slow - trot - - -

Not sure they are an ESSENTIAL piece of kit...

My mare has rhythm beads. Shes a clumsy mare and finds it a lot easier to concentrate on schooling if I help her keep a rhythm in trot vocally, usually by my voice but the rhythm beads have the same effect. Plus they look soooo pretty! I haven't used them for ages as they have been packed away, but now you have reminded me I may just go get them out!

I do agree with the above about them not being an essential piece of kit, and wouldn't hold out any hope of them improving things by masses, but they are a pretty 'novelty' item.

Thanks for your views and experiences. I didnt think they would be a miracle cure otherwise everyone would be using them. Those pesky pheasants do know how to make them selves known at the last minute. Think Ill give them a go. Just hope he doesnt freak out when he hears them.

A friend of mine had them on her horse. They looked and sounded quite pretty, but she got comments from dog walkers, such as, "Is your horse Roman Catholic, lol?" because they look like rosary beads. :)

However, one day her horse seemed fed up and he bent down and actually broke the wire with his teeth, spilling the beads in long grass, which made it difficult for her to collect the beads. I think she might have had them restrung, through.

If you like the idea, I don't see the harm. But the wire they're strung on is not indestructable.
