I can ride but am unfit after a 7 year break, and want to get in some riding before backing my 4 year old next year.

Could anyone recommend somewhere where I can hack out hourly within a commutable distance of Axminster/Honiton/Lyme Regis? Taunton would be okay, as would the Exeter area.

I'm thinking that a few hour-long hacks will be the best way to start back, then to move on to lessons once I'm fitter and have gotten over the inevitable 'soreness' of riding again

Many thanks.

Years ago I used to ride at Budleigh Salterton Riding School, they had plenty of horses and ponies for all abilities and loads of off road hacking on the common. I'd highly recommend it there!

There aren't many riding schools any more. If you want to get fit for riding you could try doing a couple of pilates classes a week.
