The horse i am looking to buy has 3 sarcoids - a small one above her left eye and one on her belly and one on her inner hind leg. Her current owner says they dont affect her at all. But i dont really know anything about them so looking for advise really about them -what are they? What will happen in un-treated and can they b treated?

Personally, I would not buy a horse knowing it had sarcoids.... Your insurance will not pay to have them removed as they are a pre-existing condition.

If you were considering buying it, I would only suggest making sure the price is very very low.

My boy has a few on him and they have never caused him any probs!! Depending where they are some sarcoids can be removed but vets advise most of the time to leave them as it could cause more problems. We put Zinc and Caster Oil Cream on my boys sarcoids and has helped him so much. If your really worried get your vet to come and have a look at the sarcoids!! x

sarcoids can be a pain, generally they dont affect horses at all they just look unsightly; however if they come up on any areas where you use tack; like in the girth area, its painful for the horse and you should have them removed before considering riding them, although even after removing them they can grow back.
Personally I wouldn't get a horse with sarcoids but if you're serious about it just make sure the pice is really low :)

I wouldnt touch a horse that had sarcoids near the eye. Very, very difficult to treat and also very expensive. Unless it is an outstanding competition prospect i personally wouldnt even consider it.

Just my opinion, but TBH I would be very wary too - they will be excluded by your insurers and can be very expensive to treat, and treatment can be unsuccessful. Even if treated, they can recur in the same place, or anywhere else, and depending on where and how they appear, can render your horse uncomfortable and unrideable... I bought a lovely 4 yr old 2 years ago who has just developed 3 sarcoids!! Fortunately, my insurers will pay for treatment for 12 months from the date they were first spotted, so we are awaiting a treatment protocol from Prof Knottenbelt at Liverpool Uni - if you have a look on their website you'll get some interesting info which may help you decide what to do. My horse's value has decreased significantly, although luckily he is nice looking, straight-forward and does whatever I ask with a smile on his face! IMHO unless your potential purchase is exactly what you're after in every other way, and unless you can reduce the price significantly (and you have a bit of cash saved up should the current sarcoids need treatment) I would pass on this one. Sorry! Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Prof Knottenbelt has a website that you should read before you make a decision.
The thing about sarcoids is they are unpredictable. Some horses can have one or 2 & it never affect them. Others, like mine, have many with some in difficult areas. Sadly she is being pts tomorrow because of them. The eye is a particularly difficult area.
