i have set out below a verysad tail which i want people to read and take notice of?
my friend has 3 ex-raceers at home which we all ride love and enjoy, my friend works in a racing yard her faveriot horse came up for grabs, she decide to take the horse and keep it near were she works. first mistake she cant drive, so needed to rely on others to take her to the livery yard, near druids heath. the was moved on wednesday or thursday last week, he was put into large field with other horses he was fine, it all starts going badly wrong from this point. my friend was away racing for to days and couldnt get up to check on him. the livery yard owner said not a problum she would keep an eye on him.
she finley got to see him yesterday,
WHAT A MESS HE WAS IN ?
myself and her mom went down on a rescue mission.
we arrived at the farm, went to the field the horse was standing some 500/600 yards away in the distance under a tree. here is what i saw
horse struggling to remain standing
had to deep lasarations to right hind fetlock. one of which had puss coming from it badly swollen.
coverd in scraps over side of his body,
his back bone was sticking up there was also lump or swelling on spine.
the horse was very tucked up
swollen front knee very hard to the touch very very hot
eyes were red in colour[membrains]
looking around there was sheep wire on the ground which is possibly were he got the cuts on the fetlock from.
he was also de-hydrated his only assces to water was at the top end of the field, the horse had been bullied possbly by one or more of the other horses, hence the dehydration, they wouldnt let him near the trough, this had a bearing on what happened but the horse was in that much pain he couldnt walk far any way without fallin over.
SAD FACT THERE WERE OTHER SO CALLED HORSE OWNERS WITH HORSES IN THE FIELD THEY DID NOTHING TO HELP I HOPE SOMEONE READS THIS AND KNOWS WERE THE PLACE IS YOU SHOULD ALL HANG YOUR HEADS IN SHAME. FROM THE LIVERY OWNER DOWN TO MY FRIEND [YES SHE DID THINGS FOR THE RIGHT REASON BUT PUT NO THROUGHT BEHIND WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THINGS WENT WRONG
SO SHE HAS TO TAKE SOME OF THE BLAME.]
THE VET WAS CALLED
the horse made its way up the field, with its owner straight to the water, he drank a large amount. we got him out the field and i filled a bucket which he drank 3/4 of. [i should point out his sheath was badley swollen and he was also coverd in flys and bits]
the livery owner never came near in fact we had to go find her and ask if we could use a stable, we told which one to put the horse in, she also stated she had TEXED my friend on sunday to say the horse had not moved much?
someone then came to remove one of the horses out the field her first coment "HE WAS LAME WHEN HE ARRIVED" yEH BUT HE HAD NOT HAD THE [****] KICKED OUT OF HIM HAD HE?
HER COMENT MINES GOT NO BACK SHOES ON? BIG DEAL.
VET arrives. very proffenical checked the horse out from head to foot,
first thing he had a FRACTURED ACCESSORY CARPAL BONE
AT THE BACK OF HIS KNEE.
DEEP WIRE CUTS,
VERY DE-HYDRATED
AND SOME KIND OF NERVE DAMAGE CAUSED BY BEING BADLEY BEATEN UP BY THE OTHER HORSES IN THE FIELD
WHICH WAS POSSIBLY WHY HE HAD A LUMP OF SWELLING ON HIS SPINE?
PROG
frown.gif
NOSISE,NOT GOOD IF THE HORSE TRIED TO LAY DOWN OVER NIGHT HE WOULD HAVE PANICKED AND CAUSED HIMSELF MORE PROBLUMS?
so we decided to put an end to a brave little horses suffereing we had to again find the liveryn owner she said she didnt want the horse being put down on the main yard, and she also said IM A FARMER IM USED TO THIS.
so the brave little horses was lead around the corner given a sedative and put down.
the people concerned should all hang there heads in shame.
WERE WAS THERE COMMON SENCE THERE DUTY OF CARE FOR THIS LITTLE HORSE?
THERE WAS NONE.FROM ANY OF THE PARTIES INVOLVED.
SHAME ON ALL OF YOU?
when the horse was put down we again were able to look at the horses knee it was broken?
he was even to weak to have been put in a box a taken for xrays.

What a terrible thing to happen, and all because people did not bother to help and assist.

Really sad for the poor horse and your friend. People make you mad sometimes, but when the end result is this, it is absolutely shameful.

What an ordeal ! it is shameful that people only look out for themselves and not for all - i personally think everything should be written down and reported to the livery yard owner who has a legal duty of care to horses left on their premises and in their care. prehaps we should all check that our livery yards have insurance of care custody and control and the expertise and level of care before we move to a yard. BHS have an excellent scheme in approved livery yards which help in disputes and give reassurance to the standard of care.

This is a tragic case and hopefully some good will come out of it. Best of luck. x

That has brought me to tears. I can not believe any one could leave a horse like that, surely someone would have seen him being picked on.
As a yard, even if it's not their horse they should atleast check or cast an eye. the yard should be investigated, sadly too late for your friends horse, but just think if some one else take a new horse to the yard and the same happends, maybe they should also look at which horses are safe to be turned out with others.

I can't believe what I have just read. What a terrible livery yard. ((())) to your friend for her loss. Yard owner should take the blame fully after all from what you say you friend asked her and she offered to keep an I eye on him how and earth can you miss those sort of injuries.

dreadful ! the horse should have been removed from the field before it came to this - call there selves livery yard owners - if i saw a horse being bullied badly at my yard i would remove or seperate the victim (or bully) and so would anybody else down my yard. call therselves horse lovers. Poor horse - how long was he standing for in cronic pain. cant even start to image. he was also probably bullied whilst injured as well

i am utterly speechless to all this!!! what livery was the horse on may i ask. It has to be said your friend knew she/he would be away racing for days on end, were they really capable of taking on the responsibility of horse ownership? I cannot believe people stood by and watched a poor animal deteriorate so much. but having said this, i do not think your friend should have bought him....RIP poor horse.

I'm sorry but I agree with Black_Horse, your friend should never have purchased the horse and dumped it a a livery yard with bad fencing and assumed that it would settle immediately when put in a field and also asking the YO to keep an eye on a horse isn't the same as paying for livery where someone would be fly spraying it, making sure it has access to water if it's being bullied and assuming sole responsibility for an animal whilst the owner is away.
I am saddened that no-one stepped in when the horse was injured but it was your friends responsibilty and no-one elses.

Poor horse though.

Sad to say but I agree with you.
It's not as if the owner was a novice owner, she should have known a lot better and then the OP would not have had to pick up the pieces. Poor little horse.

thank you all for your kind and very correct coments, they were all in there own way very correct and not negitive.
the mom was for going up the wall at all people concerned in-act the owner of the coloured horse who we think was the main bully just said my horse has no hind shoes on? what a comment, we never even got a sorry not from her or any one not even the yard owner.
the owner [of the horse] is gutted she has to face straight facts in that she has to take some of the responsablity for firstly having the horse and second not making adaquate arrangments for the horse being cared for when she was not there, or in fact beliving the livery yard owner that the horse was in safe hands, the yard is sited just off the A453 Druides Heath, Wyhall, which is i belive is Alverchurch, south Birmingham.
its a very sad end, the horse has now been cremated and his ashes have been scatted in a field may his sprit roam free.

This is all very sad, sorry for your friend and agree that she must take some responsibility for assuming everything would be ok and leaving it. However, if she had specifically asked someone to keep an eye on and they agreed then very very bad on that persons part

I do disagree though that the owner of the bullying horse is in some way to blame. It really gets me irritated when people get blamed for their horses behaviour in a field as the way I see it is that we have no control over what they do and the majority of the time the best we can do is let them sort out their own herd structure. I certainly don't feel annoyed with people if their horses bully or chase mine in their field- not their fault, and not mine if mine chases theirs!

This sounds on face value like an owner not making adequate plans and everyone else turning a blind eye. I have to ask though if the horse was only put down yesterday how they have managed to get the ashes back and scattered in under a day? Sorry, being a new poster with a story like this does make me wonder if there is more to this.

Good point "Happyhorse" does seem a bit speedy?

As for the OP then I think somebody should be made responsible for this, the horse so obviously suffered so somebody must take the blame surely.
