My family bought 2 spaniel puppies last week, we went to see them and they all seemed happy and healthy so we came home with 2 little boys, one was a little bit smaller than the other. We got them home and they were been little stars, they came on really well with toilet training, eating well and bright and happy in themselves, playing etc. I made sure they had a snuggly blanket in their basket to keep them warm, a few days later the little pup had a cough in the morning but by the afternoon i didnt hear him cough again. This was on christmas eve.

This morning we got the smaller pup out of the basket, yesterday he ate his tea as normal and was a bit snoozy so he went to sleep for a bit and then got up and played etc, but i noticed the cough had returned. When we got him out the basket this morning he was limp and quiet, he seemed to do a big burp when he was picked up. I thought he was dehydrated so began to sort him some fluids and he was perky and wagging his tail. Meanwhile i asked my dad to phone the emergency vet to arrange to get down there. All of a sudden he lay on his side and seemed to be stretching and panting, then he suddenly stopped breathing. When i picked him up blood had come out of his mouth. What would have caused him to pass away like this?

Im so upset about it, he was a lovely little pup but at least he got a good home for the short time he was with us. His brother is ok and is due at the vets in the morning for vaccinations etc. Im not too pleased about the breeder though, we asked if the puppy was well and he said yes, in the ad it stated that they were healthy puppies, when the little one wasnt. Hes offered to let us have another for half the price, have i got any rights on asking for my money back or getting another puppy? Or is it buyer beware? Any help would be appreciated.

As far as I understand it if they are a proper breeder and not a puppy farmer usually they will give you all your money back. Plus if they are a proper breeder they would probably expect an autopsy so that they know what the puppy died of a) to prevent future breedings from producing ill puppies b) to make sure they understand what killed it.

If it turns out to be your fault that the puppy died then a half price puppy is a good deal. It is bet to find out what was wrong.

Oh no how horrible for you and his little brother! I am not entirely sure about this but if the puppies are KC reg then I think they get 6 weeks free insurance? I think it is best to have a post mortem done on the pup. I would discuss the situation with breeder and if you feel that you are not getting the desired assistance, then I would be inclined to phone the KC and explain to them, to see what they would suggest.
