A close friend of mine has been diagnosed with secondary cancer and the prognosis is not good - sadly she doesn't have long.

She has asked me to help her make a decision re her 3 horses. I could possibly have the yearling, but she has 2 older mares that will also need rehoming.

I have had a look on the BHS anbd WHW websites, but can't find any info re rehoming, and appreciate they are chocker with welfare cases anyhow. Obviously the ideal would be to try and sell/rehome them before my friend can no longer look after them, but as the market is so slow, am concerned I may have take all 3 on. I could have them short term but just don't have the land or finances to keep them all permanently.

Any ideas/advice please....

Im sorry about your friend- awful time for all involved.
I would advertise them now and give yourself as long as possible to sell. Price them sensibly and they will sell. Im presuming both are sound and able to be worked rather than just companions. Or could you put up for permanent loan rather than sell? Failing that what about colleges if they are suitable types

Thanks guys. One mare is more sellable as in only 12, broken to ride and has had a foal, but won't be everyone's cup of tea.

The other mare is aged and kept as a companion, so I would be leaning towards pts, but that is something we are going to discuss when I see her next week.

Does anyone know about 'bequeathing' a horse to a charity? Hopefully it won't come to that, but possibly another area to investigate.

So sorry to hear about your friend.
When you say 'older mares' did you mean veterans (or just older than the yearling)? I believe the veteran society may help you to rehome rather than taking them on for you.

Thanks pearlsaslinger - certainly the 'aged' mare could be a candidate for help from the VHS. Will have a look on their website now.

I think for giving to charity they are all pretty full but if planning to leave money with horse to allow them to afford another mouth it maybe easier. As for aged mare i would also consider seriously pts is an option as atleast you know what happens then
