Italy is reknown for its consumption of horsemeat but things are changing and not for the better. For many years, all equines have had to have a passport issued by the FISE, UNIRE or the local health authority veterinary section where blood tests and vacs were noted. The European Parlliment has now made us choose whether or not to sign chapter 9 of our horses passport. If signed it excludes the horse from being slaughtered for any reason, even humanitary reasons. This is to keep drugs out of meat for human consumption and is not aimed at horse welfare in any way. The result is now being seen. Ive had 3 phonecalls in the past week asking me if I wanted to take on the callers horses-they were willing to give them to me for free!!! Ive managed to rehome one of my liveries and that wasnt easy so there is no way Im taking on other peoples problems

. I know it isnt a pleasant thought but tbh the free horse situation is not good for horse. He would be better off being sat on a plate with some greens

. At least his suffering would be over before it had begun.
I forgot to mention...vets will NOT pts a horse unless its 100 per cent warrented so the owner is stuck with a horse that he can neither keep nor get rid of. Italy is not like GB where horses live happily ever after in green fields (sadly). Life is a bitch.

Sorry Mairi--are you saying that if a horse's quality of life becomes very poor a vet will not pts at owners request? A horse has to drop dead!
What happened to horse welfare?

I cant think where I read it but will look again--something about standardising veterinary protocols across Europe--maybe someone else will have seen it.

thats exactly what is happening. If there is the slightest chance that bute or some other drug will keep the horse going for a bit longer he will not be PTS (by the majority of vets). Same with small animals

What an appalling situation for poor horses to get stuck in, absolutely their well being is NOT in anyone's mind.
