this is driving me mental!

have had this prob with CS for a while and am 99% certain its his shape but any ideas would be appreciated...

when i had him as a 4yo he was ridden in a Bates Innova with sheepskin between saddle and whatever pad was used. This worked fine, everything stayed where i put it and nothing moved.

as a 6yo he had obviously changed shape and the saddle started to slip back significantly, taking sheep and pad with it, so everything stayed aligned, but just a few inches too far back (particularly if he did any acrobatics...)
saddle checked, tweaked and re-checked and saddler, physio and horse all happy with saddle, but it kept on moving-started using a super thin gel pad between pad and horse and bingo-eveything stays in place again, horse happy.

12months down the line, horse is working more uphill, saddle is no longer working for me, and whilst sheep and saddle remain aligned, they are still slipping backwards together, off saddlecloth rear edge and the front of the saddlecloth is wrinkling up and doing all sorts of odd things, with or without the gel pad.

saddle gets changed and new one is fitted to accomodate a small gel riser and sheep pad (as after much experimentation, that is what horse seems to like).
initially use it it with very thin anti slip gel pad against horse but it becomes clear he doesnt like that set up with this saddle and the front edge of pads are STILL wrinkling up.

have tried going back to sheep and pad, no gel, no riser-everything moves back, then pad slips out from under saddle.

with gel riser ON TOP of pad, it all moves back a bit (but not too horrendously) but front edge of pad is wrinkling up-its like the top with section stays still, and the section near girth stays still, but the bit in the middle tries to move back so entire thing ends up wrinkled up.

horse is very happy, not sore and going great guns, saddler says its his confo-he does have ridiculously long shoulder blades..........and i am inclined to agree that the sheer range of movement of his shoulders pushes the pad back, because its attached at top and bottom only the middle can move, hence wrinkling up. He has obviously matured shape wise and is fairly hard fit, not carrying baby fat any more, hence i think why saddle never used to move, but does now.

its a mono flap saddle to complicate things, so most of my pads dont have a top attachment any more, but the gel riser pad keeps them stuck in place there anyway, and the girth attachment is the same, its the 4/5 inches between the 2 that tries to move, and then wrinkles.

am literlaly pullign my hair out. all i have left to try is a none riser gel pad and playing with only putting one girth strap through loop at bottom.

CS is completely happy with ANY ste up EXCEPT gel pad against skin, but thats a bit of a moot point as with or without gel on skin, the front edge wrinkles.

please god someone know how to stop this...........................

My friend has this problem with her Sue Carson and my new WOW does the same - it's because they are monoflap!

Only solution is to go back to old fashioned saddlecloths with all the attachments or get your saddler to sew D-ring and girth attachments to your Anky pads etc (what I have done)... my WOW fitter said the numed hi wither numnahs are the best for staying put with these saddles :D

same happens even with D ring and girth attachments though, anky pads are actually better as too thick to wrinkle up much and used to happen with the Innova which wasnt a mono flap.

ah, wonder if i could get something like the shape of the neoprene bit but in gel, to hold frnt of saddlcloth in place, will get googling! need a gel pad with longer flaps, lol!

I have this problem with my horse who has large shoulders and does ridiculous things with them! It happens with both his jump and dressage saddle and every pad I have ever tried (including the barnsby non slip one). The only pad that doesn't move is the ecogold jumper pad under his jump saddle (havent tried the dr one). What I do for every other pad is put some non slip matting like this, cut to shape between saddle and numnah (I brought a huge sheet of the stuff from tesco which was 'car boot liner'):

What about using a more rigid pad such as the KM elite pad, I think you'd be hard pressed to make one of them wrinkle!!

Have you tried a Kieffer melton cloth? They are traditional cotton quilt but very rigid - I like them as they stay up in the gullet so well but can't imagine that they could actually bunch up with a saddle on them.

The other suggestion would be ecogold. I saw them at BETA & they are quite radical in design & look but again are rigid & grippy - they are designed to have no attachments so must stay in place or the eventers wouldn't use them!

Annoying things happen to Rowan's saddle pads as well :( The top stays still but the bottom moves backwards so it takes on like a werid superman cape type thing and pulls down on his withers. Weridly it happened with his Barnsby grip pad and the Anky pads but not with the thicker eskadron or the eurostar pads cos they are more rigid and thicker and have the girth loops.
So annoying that I now can't use the Anky pads on him now though :(

We use this on the racehorses at work and its amazing for not letting saddles slip. We wet it a bit first.

I have the same problem with my new horse. He has a monoflap jumping saddle. Even just walking everything slides off, however the weird thing is, even if my girth is not tight enough the saddle does not move at all, and fits nicely, so it doesn't necessarily mean your saddle doesn't fit.
Any more suggestions appreciated!

Ooh my, thought I was the only one with this problem. in the process of trying new saddles even though my saddle fitter don't think it will help.
like your boy it never used to do it but since growing and working better, she is also build really uphill and she is friesian so has big front action at the shoulder so don't help ither. Have tryed everything you have and more. Her saddle and why ever else is on just slips so far back no matter how tight I have the girth. It's fine in walk but trot starts to slip and then god forbid I canter am finding myself most rides having to get off and move saddle. Def going to try some of the stuff off ebay!

Maybe put the pad a bit too far forward to start with in the hope if it does slide back it will slide back into position? Pad pulled up into front of gullet really well? Bareback? :D

This may sound crazy - though it works well for my big shouldered Welsh:
have you tried the pads without using any of the straps/attachments? just lay the pads in the right place on the back, nestle the saddle in place, pull pads up into the gullet then girth up.

Have you tried the Nuumed anti-slip range? I compete SJ and XC in these as otherwise the numnah ends up slipping back as he has huge shoulders and does extend well over a fence. If you can't see what you want on their website, call them and they will make to order. I had the antislip one made in the close contact style as a one off as years ago they didn't do that style in the antislip. You could mix and match the antislip with wool, so have wool next to CS and antislip next to saddle?

My monoflap never did this though and I didn't use any of the straps to keep the saddlecloths in place. I think it comes down to horse shape. Do you fully clip out or leave some hair on his back?

Full clip but happened when he wasn't clipped too.

Am going to give the eBay stuff a go and will report back as tried the thin gel pad laid the wrong way ( so it came down under flaps rather than along back) and that def helped.

Will also try using no loops Velcro etc, at.

Sadly no matter how far forward I put everything, one circuit of poncey trot and its moved a mile :(

Am pretty sure it won't be this - but does the same happen with different girths? Given if I remember correctly you recently changed to the fairfax - it doesnt coincide with this does it? Just a thought.

FWIW as a groom on big dressage yard, they only ever put one strap through girth strap and one stayed over the top...I do the same now through habit, never had anything move, but whether thats irrelevant...?!

KMP-same happened with sheepskin lined girth sadly but good thought!

acavallo WILL keep it in place, but only if next to his skin which he's decided is a no go :(

have bought myself some light/think drawer liner and will cut anumnah shape out to use then out my gel riser/gel sheep pad on top as that *should* (in theory) stabilise the front edge of the saddlecloth too.
