Hi,

I'm a bit cr*p in the tack department, I need a new saddle because my current one doesn't really fit my horse!

I've got about £600 to spend and would prefer a jumping saddle, not bothered about new, I'd prefer a more quality second hand - what am I looking at in this price range??

You'd get a good one for that especially if you go for a good 2nd hand one.

I can reccommend Bates saddles (you can change the gullets) and Ideal saddles are good aswell. But im not into jumping so i'll leave the jumping experts to advice you a bit more.

Prehaps get a local saddler to bring out some jumping saddles for you to try and fit it?!

You could be looking at my almost new 17" medium Cliff Barnsby John Whitaker saddle, which has nobody to wear it!

That's good money for a secondhand saddle so you should have a good choice. The Pessoa's come in around £900 new, so you might well find a used around your price. Jeffries, Bates and older Stubbens should also be around for that money.

If you want a really good value for money saddle though, i can recommend the Stubben CTD range. They're being sold off cheap now from the Stubben website....around £400 brand new ! I paid nearly £900 for mine

They're a nice saddle though, and the Le Parcour S or VSS or the Le Concour are nice jumping saddles

I have the CTD SP1 "Le Concour" in Choco

My wife reckons it's really uncomfortable, but i love it

It's typical Stubben...fairly firm to ride in...but if you like that, it's not a problem.

I *think* they're cheap because they're being discontinued...but don't quote me on that

Either way though a brand new Stubben for £400 is a bit of a bargain really imo

ETS: I got mine because it was what fitted and what the fitter brought out. If i had the choice, i would probably go for the CTD S "Soniera" or the standard CTD S as they are slightly more forward cut and i want an all out jumping saddle really

I am in same position at the moment and was having a long in depth discussion with my saddler (who is a master saddler)about Pessoas - she went to Beta the other day and was totally unimpressed with the new ones and agrees with what has been said before that they fit hardly any horses properly. I hate Stubbens as think they are too heavy. I have heard Devoucoux and Butet are bad for horses backs. The one I have kind of got my eye on is an Ideal Close Contact. Even my saddler agreed that Ideal are good. Maybe speak to Cullohill as she works for them? I like Albions but the knee rolls are too big for me. The other make I like are Prestige which I had a feel of in the saddlers the other day and are very nice quality.

I agree about the Prestige....would rather like a Paris 'D' myself having 'felt' one at Norton Heath last year

Dunno if you'd get one for £600 though....they're about £1400 new

So are CTD a more competitivly priced version of Stubbens or something?? Seems way too much of a bargin! My friend has got a couple of stubbens I could try on him, will they all be the same fittings?? I'm excited now!

Yes the pessoas are a pain to fit! However, my Bates Momentum is very similar to a pessoa to ride in, and you can take the block off it, or buy smaller ones to suit. Ideals are lovely on the horses backs as they have small points... Excelle are also very good, but have been brought by Ideal....

The way i was sold it by my saddler is this...

Stubben realised they were getting a bad reputation for being 'old-fashioned' and 'hard' saddles. They wanted to change this so decided that a 'new' brand was in order and so they trained a load of Spanish saddle makers and got them to build the CTD saddles that theyhad designed

I have to say, the build quality on mine is as good as most Stubben's i've owned...and they are basically just a little more modern in their design

I love my albion k2 jumping and my prestige jumping

The prestige have slightly smaller knee rolls than the albion but still comfy for jumping
