I've just got a second hand english leather saddle to try. It is a lovely fit on the pony, fits well over withers, shoulders and nice wide panels with good bit of spine clearance. The only problem is when you look at it from the side the cantle sits higher than the pommel (I've always been taught they should be level). I've tried it on a similar shaped pony but who has a slightly dipped back and it looks perfect, but the pony I want it for is still young and still slightly bum high. Any opinions?
Many thanks

The cantle should sit a couple of inches higher i thought? So sounds about right. Id get it checked by a saddle fitter tho, especially while he's young, you don't want his first experiences to be pain.

Your right to a certain extent and also with the poster above but like you say if it fits well everywhere else, thing is some ponies and horses are built higher towards the backend (very down hill) so your always going to have that problem visually, so long as the balance is right, as you don't want all the weight tipping to the front end of the tree.

Best to get it checked by a saddler fitter though.

Most saddles should have the cantle higher than the head, so it is normal. It's how level the seat is from the side view that is important, get your saddle fitted professionally by a saddler to be sure, Oz :)

Ditto the above 2 posts. It could be the design of the tree or it may not fit. And its the levelness of the seat that matters, not the cantle/pommel relationship.

Forget the cantle height and judge how the seat (middle) sits. The seat should be level and the lowest point of the curve should cut the saddle in half so your weight will be distributed evenly front and back, not tilted back or forwards.
