Ok, one of my NF mares, Teazle, has been weaned from her foal for 3 weeks and my sister has been riding her most days, only roadwork in walk to build her fitness. In the last few days Teazle pulls a horrible face and tries to bite and kick (something she never does) when Ellie puts the saddle on her back. As soon as the girth has been done up, however, she stops. She is absolutely fine to ride, happy as larry.

So my question is could this be the saddle not fitting and should we get a fitter out? Or could it just be a girth thing? And what can we do about it?

She is fully clipped, so maybe a sensitive thing

Her saddle seems to fit fine, although we have had to put a Stephens fleece half pad underneath as she lost most of her topline while out of work for 12 months.

Any advice much appreciated

My mare pulls faces when her girth is done up... it is worse when she is due for her back to be done. She can get really tight through that area so its sore when you do the girth up but fine when being ridden as she loosens off/warms up. Obviously it may not be the same case as with your mare but might be worth getting someone to look her over! They are also normally quite well experienced in whether saddles fit or not so can have a look for you too as to whether you need a saddler out!

After having a foal her saddle will most definately not fit, I'd suggest you get a saddler out to check.

Id get your saddle checked, if shes lost topline then it may need altering, also if shes not normally like this then I think shes telling you something.
