Well forst of all I adore the new one and I have started work with him today but I really dont know what saddle to go for as obviously he is going to fillout with work and maturing, He is 16.1hh now and is a narrow but will probably make 16.2ish and may fill out further, so what did you do with your 3 year olds and now feed stuff...
I have been told to feed him fibre cubes, a chaff and an omega rice build up but dont know enough about it to start shovelling down his neck without knowing pros and cons and also what would you recommend as a feed or experience of what worked well with your young horses? All help uch appreciated!!

Saddle- you are about to start education that will stay with your horse for the rest of its life. Do not make do with any saddle and be prepared to get through several in the next few years. An ill fitting saddle on a young horse will cause pain to the horse and is dangerous for the rider. A thorowgood would be a good choice as a first saddle. They are only about £350 and have an adjustable gullet, they are well designed and unlike other synthetic makes, they fit!

Feed- depends on his weight, workload, grass, etc. Fibre cubes and chaff are a good start if your horse needs them.

I will be honest, from the pics I wouldn't be feeding him much at all! He looks in great condition and I would suss him out before starting to chuck feed down his neck. Nothing wrong with a couple of handfuls of chaff and cubes if you want to give him something, but I would be underfeeding to begin with.

As for saddles, go for an adjustable, cheap Wintec with changeable gullet so you can adjust as he grows, then once he is working properly and you are ready to start stepping up a gear you can buy a leather saddle. Otherwise Kent and Masters (leather type of Thorogood) are gorgeous, £650 and adjustable - my friend bought one last week and it is uber comfy!

Hi and thanks folks!!
It was a Falcon feed advisor that told me and I was a little uneasy about chucking anything more than nuts and chaff into him, I have just found a brand new Wintec saddle for £271!! So will check his sizing tomorrow and order it asap! And thanks for saying he looks in good condition!!

Why dont you just get a treeless saddle until he is 5 years old and fully grown and then buy him a fitted saddle :-D

Thats what I plan to do with my young un

I have a meadowcreek that is really comfy and fits my narrow tb well and picked it up for £250 . If you hunt you can get them cheaper as they are not a big name so tack shops and saddlers tend to put them in their sales - don't know why far comfier than alot of other saddles I have ridden in )

I'd look for a second hand Kieffer with a polytree that you can ajust.

I had one for G. When he was 3 the tree was NNM and by time he was 7/8 when I sold it the tree was set at MW.

Personally think they look much smarter than some of the Wintecs so if you're out and about but don't feel he's totally filled out then it still looks good for competitions.

I don't feed my 3 year old

Ha ha this bit made me laugh. I had a mare with very similar breeding to your chap at 3 she was 16.1 and when I lost her at nearly 5 she was 17.2hh so you may need to add a few inches on

As for feed mine just got chaff and a balancer while the grass was good she did very well on this but was very prone to dropping weight easily in the winter months.

Saddle wise I had a synthetic (wintec isabell but then i'm into dressage!!) and it was great as changed with her when she grew.
