My horse at home is fully clipped (no saddle patch) every type of saddle cloth I use rubs him behind the saddle, its not raw but the hair is being rubbed away. Any ideas has anyone else had this happen?
Thinking might invest in one of those high withered Nuu-med numnahs (sheepskin) do you think that would rub as well?

just noticed the other day that my mare had similar rubs she has a full clip but with saddle patch left, the rub is just behind the patch, i think it was from the back of the saddlecloth so put my old boys extra large one on her and it seems to have stopped, am saying up fot a sheepskin pad for her as i think this will maybe help

Am feeling bad as i usually leave a 1/2 patch under saddle, it is def happening because of the cloth maybe I will try finding one hat is longer in the back - might be tricky as the saddle is 18 inch!

try an ex large high wither griffin, ihave the normal type and the sheepskin both are fab, my saddle is a pathfinder endurance saddle and these are the only numnahs that are big enough

For and 18inch saddle you would find that the large griffen nuumed work brilliantly and are plenty long enough. I use the large saddle cloths on my 17'2 with an 18inch sadde and there is loads room

Are you sure it is a saddlecloth problem and not movement of the saddle (have had this and the area under the cantle at the back of the saddle either side of the spine get rubbed in sort of circular patches. If not sorted can become sore.
Point straps on the saddle with gel pad or Nuumed work for me

I was going to say it may be the saddle? Has she changed shape at all? Perhaps lost a bit of weight since the summer?

My boy is fully clipped with no saddle patch and his saddle cloths dont rub him at all.

Make sure that the saddle sits at least an inch in from the seam around the edge of the cloth/numnah, if the saddle puts any pressure on the seam or hangs over the edge of the cloth this will cause pressure points/rubs.

If the cloth is fitted correctly then maybe worth getting the saddle checked to make sure it fits correctly.

No def not saddle fit, the rub aligns perfectly with the binding of the saddle cloth, think I will invest in A high wither Griffin version and have a go with that. Doesn't help that most things rub him - his coat is very fine and in the summer he gets rub marks everywhere poor boyo!

This happened to my mare a couple of years back when she was first fully clipped, only way she doesnt get rubs is to not use a numnah, so we don't havent used one regularly for a couple of years now and she doesnt get rubbed. Also not using a numnah stops my saddle slipping on a wide low withered pony!

Use a thin one for hunting though to absorb sweat.
