Having bought a Wintec 500 with the extra wide gullet (too narrow) and a Thorowgood Pony Club XXW (too wide at front) for our chunky 4 year old Welsh C a friend suggested we look at the Saddle Company for one.

We have had a horrible year financially and have our winter hay to pay for soon as well as my daughters holiday to Cyprus (she's a bridesmaid for my sister) so don't have much cash to spare, and the other two saddles as well as a leather Thorowgood one that my mare wasn't comfy in just aren't selling

On the Saddle Companies web site there's no mention of prices, does anyone have a rough guide for me how much a 16"or 16.5" gp saddle for hacking and schooling in would cost fitted for our 13.2 chunky boy?

Another thing I noticed was that people on various online horse sites have posted about buying one second hand off ebay then getting a SC saddler to alter it to fit. Just how much can they be altered, ie if I bought a medium fit would it be able to be changed to a wide/xwide? Also roughly how much would the saddler charge?

I'm in North Lincolnshire and the SC doesn't have any fitters listed for my area on their website, does anyone know of any?

Sorry for the numpty questions but I was out of horses for many years and am still playing catch up!

New i think they are around 400-550 depending if you buy from the pony or horse range.
Mine was second hand off ebay and has been adjusted alot from a medium wide to fit my very wide cob.
It may be worth calling the SC as i dont think all their fitters are listed on the site, it costs me about £25 to get mine adjusted

Is it this one?

Shame I can't afford a new one for Karina at the moment, herthorowgood is ok but that one is lovely

I think the longest Ron could take would be 16.5" though. I've got to sell the other saddles first too.

Wonder if anyone wants any help getting a website up and running or any graphics work done? Here's my own site for an example: Ladyfyre-Graphics , my daughters that I made is Ponydaze.com (link in my sig)

I got a Saddle Co working hunter saddle recently for my welsh & it was about £500. (leather / synthetic mix)
Might be better idea just to get a local saddler to come out though with a whole range of saddles to try lots of different makes on your lad.

Trouble is he still has some filling out and growing to do yet, his front end has to catch up with the rear! That's why I was looking for something adjustable. One of the others I was thinking about was the Wintec Wide but I don't think they make them under 17" if I remember right so that would rule that out

My daughter rode a friends horse in a Thorowgood Cob saddle and really hated it so that's out of the question too...

I was musing over the saddle company dressage saddle on eBay.
The onyl thing that concerns me about these saddles is the fact that all the gullets seem to be a V shape. As in wide gap at the front going to a smaller gap at the back

I though symmetry in the gullet was desirable?

Suspect if you ring the Saddle Company they will tell you their saddles can be adjusted to whatever. The fitter I bought mine off (sadly she no longer deals with Saddle Co) had a templating machine and she is only prepared to adjust to a maximum of two sizes otherwise she felt the balance of the symmetry was distorted.

I have an event saddle co saddle. I've also ridden in the GP, close contact and WH ones. They are fantastic and the gullet in mine is straight not V shaped (as have all the ones I've seen - I can see why photos would make them look otherwise though). I had it made to template and it cost £525 (has the suede seat and knees which costs extra). They can in theory be adjusted to fit any width...if I was buying one second hand I'd look for one as close to what I wanted though. I wouldn't buy a narrow if I needed a X Wide for example.
I was recommended one by an equine Bowen therapist. She met the guy who owns the company after forking out £900 for a supposed made to measure saddle only to discover the tree wasn't symmetrical!! He took it to bits to investigate. They are very light (I have the Verona which is half leather half synthetic), the leather is excellent quality (hardy ever needs cleaning) and the serge is so kind to the Horse.
Well worth the money, and miles better than a full synthetic saddle.

I didn't realise that they were like that, our boy's shoulders still have to catch up with his behind so that sounds a bit dodgy for him?

That's what I was wondering about, our local tack shop at first thought that they could fit the Wintec Wide gullet to our Wintec 500 but when she looked into it she said that it would weaken the saddle so I presume it is the same thing.

Also if they are changing the shape of the tree itself is there a finite number of times it can be changed before weakening? or is it a matter of changing a part on it? (dumb question!)
