I have a 5 yr old will be 6 in July 2012 she is currently ridden in a lovely dressage saddle and goes great in it, however, daughter has started jumping pony, only little cross poles etc and looking to do her first clear round in February. So I guess I need to buy pony a new saddle so should I get her a gp or jumping one? She has a big shoulder, was thinking of getting a made to measure or should I wait till pony older as she might change shape again.

Thanks

could you not get a saddle company one made to measure, it can then be altered as and when the pony changes shapes? They are also very good value for money. I have moved all of mine over from Albions to SC and am very pleased with them. Let me know if you want me to recommend a fitter as I can thoroughly recommend my lady and she is your area :)

Very few people or horses (I've not come across one in 3 years of fitting) need M2M - there are a few specialist pony jump saddles out there - even if the pony has a wither they tend to need a flat tree, flat close-ish contact flocked panels and lots of girthing options. If the pony is wide and at all flat I find that synthetic trees aren't as stable as traditional beech laminate trees.

I think it is worth trying GPs - I have many client jump open workers tracks in our straight cut GP saddle, but it depends on the horse, rider and the individual saddle. As always the best bet is to find a good fitter you can work with.
