I bought my TBx connie 4 year old a thorowgood compact GP, in the hope that an adjustable saddle would see her through her major growing phase. However, I'm not very happy with the fit and am wondering if the tree is too curved for her back. The photos below show it with the wide gullet in, with that in the back of panels make contact with her back but with the extra wide gullet in which makes it sit better pommel end, it doesn't sit so well at the back. Sorry for the photos, taking them in the stable at night wasn't perhaps the best conditions for a photoshoot!

No advice re fit (I'm no expert and hard to see from photos). Did you get it fitted by a saddler? Get someone out to fit a saddle properly for you. No point taking chances with its back and good humour at the start of its ridden career!

Tickeytavey, I completely agree! Just such a struggle getting a decent fitter. I fitted it myself as I was hoping to get away with being able to tweak the gullets (I bought one of each MW to XW) I had only used it to have a wander round the school in walk a few times a week but will stop now. She is quite a grumpy mare, she is on a ulcer supplement and has regular physio visits as she does have a tight back. I was hoping to keep her going in my HM fhoenix but she loathes that with a passion. I have a very good saddle exchange fitter local to me, who used to give me dressage lessons but was trying to avoid buying new as she will grow out of it so quickly. I may have to reconsider though.

It can be so hard to find a really decent saddler, I agree. Your saddle exchange person sounds promising though, especially if you have a relationship with them as an instructor already; hopefully they won't try and flog you a new saddle if you don't need it! I guess spending money now will hopefully save you it on physios etc later. Hope you get it sorted and can enjoy riding your horse :-)

I would say from your description that you are right and that the tree is too curvy, the photos don't really show a lot, a bit dark and grainy and you need to get up a bit higher from the photos from the front, a lor further away for the photos from the side as well, and the girth should be snug, can't see whether there is one :)

And your old trainer may be lovely but do your research on the company, you are dealing with them, not just her.

Thanks sbloom, I was really hoping you might comment. I agree the photos aren't good! Thanks too for your advice about the saddle exchange. I know the photos aren't good but would you be able to hazard a guess about the make of saddle which might suit? I'm thinking something like an ideal or maybe a falcon hawk?
