I noticed a month or so ago my saddle kept slipping (girth done up properly). So the combination of this and lots of uni work I've given Gilby a little holiday to play in the field. He is booked in to have his back checked and once this is done I want his saddle either refitting or he may even get a new one! The saddler I used at my old farm is in Preston and their saddler doesn't really travel anymore due to ill health so I'm now looking for a new one who will travel out to the farm in Carrington, Manchester. Any recommendations greatly appreciated!

Thank you and Merry Christmas! x

I wouldn't use L for Leather if they gave me the saddle for free. One person's horse was made so sore in its back she couldn't ride for 6 weeks, and another had a saddle fitted without the girth being done up and her riding in it. Total rubbish. Greetings from just down the road by the way!

I would recommend Village Saddlery David Ashton is nice my horse has been fine. Had him out a fews times after they did a total reflock on my saddle a few years ago. My horse has had no problems with his back, he is just like the princess and the pea!! so always makes it very clear when something's not right. I also have a physio for him regulary and never had a problem from the saddle.
Its hard recommending a saddler as one person can really rate one saddler yet another person won't touch with a barge pole.
I for one wouldn't say L for leather no one there is a qualified fitter. (look on the master saddler website)
Happy saddle hunting!!

Hi Kwinstanley. My mare is retired (I always used Derby House and another chap whose name has totally escaped me right now) but a friend of mine swears by Barbara Williams who is only down the road in Lymm. Village Saddlery - hmm, my friend has lost the entire summer for riding due to the cock-up there but perhaps that was a one-off. Admittedly the horse is a nightmare to fit, but...

I have had Keith From L for Leather for about 10 years and in that time have had both second hand and new saddles. I have had 2 saddles that he has made with his own fair hands and i have had 2 new saddles that he has taken measurements for and had them made (one being an Ideal Suzannah).

One of my horses is a really hard fit, he is 18hh with High withers and is in a 19" tree with everything make bigger to accommodate he not only had made sure that my saddles fit perfectly he has also offered no end of advice on the makes and models that will fit the shape of my horse.

You can only comment on your experiences of a company but i have recommended Keith to a lot of people who are all more that satisfied with his service.

He also lent me a saddle when mine were stolen - above and beyond the call of duty.

I believe that the old saddle fitter at Derby House wasn't qualified either. They were with the Master Saddlers but it was the owner of Derby House that was qualified not their saddle fitter!

I will check the master saddler website before getting anyone out as saddles are expensive enough without something going wrong too! Thank you all for advise and opinions!

I am another one that would recommend david from village saddlery, not cheap but does a very good profesional job.
My horse physio friend recommended him to me.

You will find him on the master saddler website.
