Before I pull my hair out, a last resort/cry of help, I thought I'd pick your brains to see if you know of anyone saddlers in the East Yorkshire area (DN14) which large collection of new or second hand saddles that are willing come out to me.

Qualified fitter preffered but not essential.

Basically all I want is someone to come out with a van full of 16.5'' or 17'' saddles ranging from wide to X wide (new or second hand) for me to try on my livery yard....is that really too much to ask?

No good suggesting R&R, Haigh Farm Huddersfield, Ride-Away, Patrick Wilkinson or Fox Saddlers as they either don't have anything in, don't come out (fine if you wan't to take horse there) do come out but your too far away, or don't stock anything in new that would fit him anyway or telling me to make do as you'll never find something that fits him perfectly. I've tried a made to measure company but they won't come out neither as it's too far they just want me to take measurements myself and then make the saddle for me, I really can't see that working.

No good suggesting hiring transport because he's not been a box or trailer for a long time, it will cost too much and he'll only get stressed and sweated up once we get there and won't be in any metal state to be trying saddles, I just don't want to put him through that.

I'm sick to the back teeth of trailing about with saddles and having no joy.

Ok, hit me with names and numbers please before I loose the will to live!

:)

Have you tried Ray Kennan, "the tackman"? He does made to measure and has odd second hand ones. I don't know how far he travels, but his work is excellent.

You could try Hey Farm Saddlery in huddersfield or Throstle Nest Saddlery which is in Barnsley, both of these have qualified saddle fitters that will bring a variety of saddles out and fit them.

Paul at Hay Farm is great bless him but won't come out I'm afraid, he'd be the ideal person but I've already pleaded with him twice and he won't come out :(, he says it's too far but I'm more than welcome to my bring horse up there which is not something I can do, already trailed back and forth with saddlers from there and it's costing me a fortune in fuel (he's nothing in at the moment second hand wise), plus I have to pay for them first to enable me to take them away (which is understandable) but if you need to take quite a lot of new saddles away to try I simply can't lay out all the money for a car full.

Not tried Throstle Nest actually, thanks for reminding me.

Not heard of him, do you have a number/website address for him?

Thanks.

We have a lady called Cath Worsman who comes to the yard regulary to fit new, used and also reflock etc. She comes in a big white van with loads of saddles in and actually does most of the reflocking adjustments whilst there taking only the complicated lengthy adjustments back with her and returning a week later with sorted saddle :D.

Not used her myself as I use a HM treeless but she is very well rated on the yard. She can also make a saddle herself for your horse and at a very reasonable price.

I am going to be purchasing a 2nd saddle, a treed one, in the very near future and will be using her for this so will have my own personal experience of her fitting skills.

She is based Bradford way I think? Her number is 07754 774622

Good luck with your search. I was in the same boat trying to find saddles to fit till I went treeless!!

...and there's Karen Moxon - 07982 852623. She's York way, but travels all round Yorks/Humberside etc. Otherwise, if you google 'master saddlers' you'll find more.

I have just had a new saddle from Throstle Nest at Barnsley. DAvid does come out but usually only for new saddles. Ive had several from there over the years for different horses and have no complaints. Just purchased a Jeffries one, they stock lots of different brands and if you wanted to see what they have second hand, they have a good stock to hand.

Don't know her last name but the Cathy I use used to have equestrian clearance at keadby, nr scunthorpe. she still does saddle fitting & she's fab. 07971803971 xx

Thank for the contacts and numbers folks, that's very helpful, I'll make a note of them.

Finally I'm feeling like there could be some light at the end of the tunnel at some point.:)

I use a lady called Michelle Miller. She is excellent. Really nice, says it how it is. Turned up with Land Rover stuffed full of saddles - all sizes, brands, black or brown (she doesn't do synthetic btw), hunter, jumping, dressage. You name it, she's got one! I got a brown 17.5" Charles Muntford from her for less than £300 inc call out (£35) and its in excellent conditions - its as though its just been worn in :) She'll ask you what horse have you have, his age and height (in case he's growing still), what you want to do with him, what you're doing now (to accommodate for muscle build up etc) - she's fab.

She's based near Rochdale - I live in Leeds and she comes to me quite happily so I don't think travel is a problem. You can ask how far she travels but I know she does clock up a lot of mileage for customers and tries to fit people near each other in together.

Her number is 07976545178 - if she doesn't answer leave her a message or drop her a text and she will get back to you

Good Luck :)

PS: she does do saddles for much greater budgets too like Jeffries and all that jazz, in case you might have been thinking it was all cheap!!!! x

Karen Moxon and David Baxter (from Throstlenest) are both very good in my opinion. Which is more than can be said for a couple of others mentioned on this thread!!!!!!!

Karen Moxon is wonderful, used her for about 9 years. Cares about what is best for the horse and won't sell anything that isn't right for them.

Thank you again everyone for the feedback, if anything for the moment you have put my mind at ease as its been getting me down mulling over it all the time, least now I can make some calls tomorrow and get things moving.
