I was always under the impression that the gullet of a saddle has to fit the width a couple of inches behind the shoulder blade - so for example with a thorowgood gullet I would place this behind the scapula and go with the one that was the closest fit. For my mare, this is medium wide. My saddle fitter always says no to that, and that it has to be for the width of the shoulder (which is a wide for my horse). I trust her judgement as she is the professional, but my saddle always likes to sit behind/off the shoulder anyway, and then it had to be flocked up loads at the front to lift it. Who is right?
