Having had to admit defeat and give my boy a months holiday until I could get an appointment; I am getting a tad nervous! He's utterly full of it and I am nervous at the best of times! Planning to lunge first before saddler gets there then I'll say my final goodbyes to everyone I know, don the brave pants and climb aboard the beasty of doom ;-) Is a lead rein with hubby attached acceptable (nope? didn't think so!).....

ha ha ... Good Luck !! I had the same with my boy off for even longer ... I lunged him before the saddler came then lunged with the saddle on then finally climbed on for a gentle walk and trot round ... discretion was the better part of valour and I decided against a canter - he was as good as gold - the next time I rode him however !!
Hope it all goes well, perhaps a neck strap 'just in case ' :-)

Saddle fitter booked for a few days time and mine hasn't been ridden in near on 3 months apart from lunged and sat on once! Mine is usually sensible... I will however explain I may stick to walk or lunge until any demons have died!!

I won't say she usually acts fairly sensible whether ridden yesterday or weeks ago as I may jinx it... oh wait!!!

I'd lunge a fair bit before, otherwise you might confuse his freshness for poor saddle fit / pain related behaviour or, worse, vice versa. Hope it goes well.

Lead rein with hubby is more than acceptable. You have a very limited time to make the best decision possible on a saddle and if thats what it takes then fine. Be very strict with yourself, the object of the exercise is to get a saddle that enables you to progress, NOT to impress the saddle fitter with your riding skills! They will have seen a lot worse than you anyway.

I've just done this! Bought a new horse, waited a while for the saddler to come out, and got on with no idea how long he'd been riderless for (horse was only backed this summer as well). Had riding instructor firmly attached with lunge line, but the baby horse took it all in his stride.

No shame in going on the lead rein at all! Better that than feeling nervous, especially as getting a new saddle is exciting (exciting/expensive...same thing hah).

I lunged mine two days before, then let him have a play in the field for a bit.

Good luck, let us know how it pans out :)

Thanks all :-) I'd gladly be lunged on him apart from he's terrible to lunge with or without a rider so would be safer to lead rein or solo eeck.

She's a master saddler and has a very good reputation for patience thankfully! You're more than likely right, sure she's seen it all!

Cannot wait to get one sorted, waited so long to buy a nice one. I'm just going to not look whilst signing the cheque and send hubby off to make everyone tea so he doesn't find out what I spent hehe!

Does the month off not mean the horse is a different shape to what it will be in work anyway? just to be aware of before you spend lots of money!

He's been lunged etc just not ridden, sadly haven't much choice as previous saddle is miles too big now he's lost weight. Hoping to get a K&M that can have the gullet changed by the saddler or something that can be adjusted slightly. He's an utter nightmare as has huge shoulders (built from driving I think), flat back and no wither :-/

Got one hurrah!!!!!! He tried to shoot me to the stars with a massive bronc but I stayed on and he eventually calmed down! Love the new saddle, rode again today too 😀

Glad you found a saddle that you like and that fits the horse.

My saddler once told me that she gets customers asking her to fit saddles without them sitting on the horse, because they are so nervous.

I did try the 'oh it looks lovely that'll do' but she was having none of it and basically told me to get my arse in the saddle and on the horse in a nice way lol!! She was great just what I needed!!!!
