My appy x section d is built like a barrel and very short backed, she is 4 years old and has been started in a barefoot treeless. trying to sit on her and do some basic schooling is a bit like trying to sit on a greasy pole. She had a treed western saddle too but that also slid around on her so im thinking she needs something specific to cobs.
I have tried non slip pads underneath but nothing helps.

I have been looking at the Thorowgood cob & cob plus saddles and also the wintec wide.
Anyone have any experience with these saddles?
I think i would prefer a changeable gullet one as it would then do for my other cob if i competed him.

This is her in July 2010, she is still about the same width, only the front end has caught up a bit more with the back end. Cant find any decent recent photos of her shape.

We have Ideal saddles for both our ponies. One is a short backed arab cross (top left in my sig). The other is a sec A who has some withers but his previous saddle kept slipping forwards even with a toddler riding him. I've been very happy with the fit of both of them and for the sec A the Ideal saddle didn't move even with a much larger child jumping him. We managed to pick up an immaculate 2nd hand one for the arab cross which saved us a bit of money as well!

I got a (perfect, as new) brown t4cob from eBay, its the best fitting saddle for my short backed Arab x, with low withers and a broad barrel, they are straighter cut than other saddles too so don't get in the way of shoulder action. Love it. I've also had a thorowgood pony club 16.5inch saddle on her (pre changeable gullet) - the most recent ones have changeable gullets and are great for shorter.backs.

She is very short and very flat! Our trees probably include the flattest selection on the market, and if she is still as flat, she'd need our very flattest tree! Although I recommend (as much as I can recommend any of cour competitor's products!) the Thorowgood cob saddle as a good starting place for wide horses and riders on a budget, it doesn't fit all very wide backs and I really can't see it will be flat enough here. The panels are also a little too generous for some, leaving you a little perched up above the horse which can lead to instability and movement. You do see the odd NP saddle available used, but the tree you'd need is only standard in our Fen showing saddle - the M&M GP has it is sometimes but do check back with us if you see one for sale so we can check which tree is has. Obviously if you can stump for a new one we have fitters all over, including me :)
