I’m buying a second hand saddle frim
America but have no clue on the customs over here! Does anyone know how it works? I know I’ll have to pay a % of the saddle but how do I go about that? Is this sorted before hand or once it’s at customs?

I bought one from the US, it was new and I have no idea if S/H is any different. It was done at customs once it was in the UK. I had to pay import duty, vat on the saddle, vat on the shipping and the costs seemed to go on endlessly. I think there was a number to ring and I paid over t he phone before they would deliver it.

When I've bought saddles from America the courier has contacted me when it's arrived in the UK. I paid the customs online or at the depot (DHL depot near work so I've collected things from there rather than have them posted out).

Basically they contact you once it gets to the UK either by letter or email. You can then pay online, over the phone or face to face if close to the depot.

I can't remember what the % is but it's quite high.

You'll pay shipping and handling costs, plus 20% VAT. Depending which courier you use they'll get in touch for payment.

Thankyou! I had assumed it would be quite high, can’t get these saddles any where in the UK though!!

It will cost you a fair amount to get it through customs and duties. I ordered in some material from the USA to make up duffle bags with.
It was 2 years ago and things have got worse
4 metres =£22.87
Shipping=£47.71
Customs=£44.18
TOTAL £114.76
It made each metre £28.69 not sustainable to a small business and I was so angry at the sheer greed of UK customs, never again will I order from the USA or Europe now as that's gone the same way.

yeah, I had thought as much. Criminal isn’t it. It cost me enough to import my mare from Spain let alone something from America! I just hope the saddle is worth it!

mine was the same only available in the US.
I love the saddle but am not sure I would do it again. The costs were disproportionate to the cost of the saddle. I also had to pay an agents fee to get it through customs plus of course Vat on the agent's fee.
My costs (on a much larger scale) were along the lines of CDMs

I bought a house rug from the USA and all the costs were included in the price. I didn't pay anything extra. This was last month btw. The courier company phoned me to check it was OK to deliver as it was oversized but they didn't mention money.

In the past when importing goods I have had invoices turn up after it's been delivered and settled it online. I haven't had such large amounts as when I ordered from the USA though, mainly China and the charges (then) were reasonable as the Chinese never put down the real value to help us.

I asked the company I bought it off and they said there was no charge. That was 2 months ago

There’s a lot of conflicting information on charges to get it through customs. I’ll just have to see!
