Had a saddle fitter out today.

For 10mins and £50 he told me that I was too fat for my cob and that there was no suitable saddle to fit us both.

I have now calmed down and have another fitter coming on tuesday.

Cob (HW) is 14hh and saddle fitter said that he would only take a 16inch saddle (short back and short loins). I'm a size 16. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?

any pics?

If nothing else fits you could try treeless - heather moffett says her saddles are suitable for short back horses and they are ok going slightly over last rib.

no offence am assuming he is capable of carrying you - presume very stocky pony.

you can measure him from back of scapula and feel where last rib attaches to spine and measure it and see what length he can take.

think thats a bit nasty of saddler hope you didnt pay him

I did pay him as he said "that will be £50" and I was too shocked/upset to know what to do lol. My first experience with a saddle fitter too and one that was recommended by lots of peeps I know. Grrrrrr!

He's a good old chunk of a pony who is more than capable of carrying me. We've tried a barefoot cheyenne treeless but that was slightly too small for my butt.

Whereabouts in the country do you live. I had great success with a saddler in Surrey/Sussex but it's no good me telling her to use her if you live miles away :)

how rude

Just thinking saddle with smaller flap and a flatter seat might help you. Get someone else with a lot more choices, as said where are you based?

Both rude and expensive.:(

.Good job you have another saddle fitter coming out.

I had a similar experience. My horse is 16.2 ID x Shire x TB and is short in the back even though hes a 6'6 rug?? I was told by a very respected fitter that he couldnt take no bigger than a 17 inch. Im a 12/14 so could squeeze into that but saddle fitter was very helpful and said we would need a saddle with a sweeping back, so not a deep tree (I wanted a dressage saddle) and this would give me the extra room I needed. We were limited with saddles but I bought a Jaguar saddle which was probably double what my budget was. It was made to measure and this was nearly 8 yrs ago, saddle is still going strong and seeing though he was 4 when I bought it has only needed flocking.

I'm in Nottingham.

Saddle fitter coming out on Tuesday is aware of what's been said and is also aware that I know there should be saddles to fit us both. I am going to drop a bit of weight (now my thesis has been handed in!!) however 12-14 is the lowest my body seems capable of lol.

Sounds similar to me and my New Forest! We've just invested in a Saddle Company saddle, 16.5inch, with no problems re-fitting either of us on the day, although time will tell as it's on order (I wanted a different colour). It's the second Saddle Company saddle I've bought, the last one I bought for my 16hhish IDxTB 3 years ago when he was 5yrs, and he's grown a lot since then and it still fits him with regularly checks.

You could try either a panel saddle (free n easy or reacter panel) or native pony saddle co do saddles that effectivly have a 16 inch saddles panel length for the pony with the same saddle having 17 or 18 inch seat for the rider.

To be fair to saddle fitter, did he actually say you were too fat or is that something you now think? if he said that in those words then yes you every right to be miffed.

If he didn't have a saddle suitable enough, then he'd done his job properly, far better being honest than fitting something to fit you that will cause your horse problems in the future, at the end of the day although your cob I'm sure is a stocky fella and has no problems carrying you, if he's got a really short back (which I know some do have) and you need something bigger like a 17- 17.5'' which I can only assume with your weight/height, then it is going to be difficult to find something to suit you both, perhaps he was just being honest with you.

Hey

I bought my GP saddle from Bridlepaths International a couple of months ago. I had to ring up and tell them Fox's details, and mine (height, weight etc), what I will use the saddle for (mostly hacking or mostly jumping or whatever), and my budget. They were really helpful, and brought loads of saddles for me to try on and ride around in before I made my decision.

They are coming back on Tuesday to check the saddle now its had time to settle, and also to look at new saddle fittings for Whisper and Zorro. If you can get yourself back across to East Leake then you could tag on the call-out? Its £40, but we will be dividing it between the three of us. Or call them and get them to come over to you as you arent far from us.

Let me know how you get on. Love to Frankie xx
