Saddle Job Lot - What do you think?

I wouldn't. The saddle looks poor quality, as I expect, are most of the other items.

If you want a saddle for your youngster then get your saddler to fit one for you. You don't want to give the horse a bad start in life by putting any old thing on him.

Lippyx - please can you make your signature smaller. It's well over sized.

Nope

, firstly I wouldn't trust a saddle that was that cheap to be safe, and secondly I would only back a horse in a saddle that fits it. Its first experiences can affect the way it goes for the rest of its life, and an uncomfortable saddle can do a lot of damage.

do not bid on it onless you just want the other stuff. as the saddle is really cr*p as i got that lot . the other stuff was great saddle was no good. ok for my little girl to play on out side on the wall . so onless u get it at a good price then dont go there.

Yeah, I wondered about saddle quality. Well, I don't want to spend too much on just a starter saddle, it wouldn't be for riding, just to get him used to having it on etc. I intend to get a nice fitted once once I start riding him but for now, I just want something cheap really.

I wouldnt! Even just for sitting on him. The way that saddle is styled it just will not fit (unless you own a large banana). The quality is awful too.

Just use a surcingle and saddle pad for the girthing up, etc. Then get a saddle that fits. You are about to start your horses most important education, that will stay with him for life. It is false economy to buy a cheap, badly fitting saddle. Even if you arent going to ride in it you are still strapping it to your horses back!

Please dont buy it

The saddle will be Indian leather - and the bridle. rest of the stuff looks ok - if you can use it - the saddle won't last long and while it may be ok for getting him used to a saddle on his back, that's about IT! It's unlikely to go for much less than £100 - or a bit more because of other items and/or bidders who can't differentiate between saddles.

Worth a bid - but I wouldn't push the boat out!

Sorry I'm with teddyt on this one - a bad saddle is an instrument of torture, and I wouldn't even sit it on his back, let alone girth it up to "let him get used to it"

Yes, you could use a roller but a surcingle is elasticated so usually better for first training. Use it over a few numnahs/pads so the horse gets used to the 'girth' feeling.

Its a Gallop saddle I recognise the tag...The stitching is horrible on these and they are really poor quality. They aren't Clearance lots they are very cheap tack just put together in sets to make you feel you are getting a bargain the whole lot trade would not have cost more than £85.00 which probably gives a good idea of the quality.....

I would not take this saddle if it was offered to me for free! Go to a saddler who has a good selection of second hand saddles. Synthetic saddles can be very reasonably priced second hand. I would rather buy old but good quality.

Thanks peeps, pretty much confirmed my reservations that the saddle would not be the best quality. Would it be a matter of getting a saddler coming to me to measure my boy up and then hunt for saddles? Do they cost much to come and measure?

I use Solution saddles and so I can adjust them to fit any horse, or young horse as it changes shape, but if you want a traditional saddle I would go for an adjustable gullet one (like the Wintec which is reasonably priced) rather than just buying a second hand saddle which may fit him at the time you get him measured up and fitted, but 6 weeks down the line won't be right for him at all (and 6 weeks after that, etc, etc

)

At least with the Wintec (flock not Cair) you get a degree of adjustment from the one saddle, although I would still recommend you get someone knowledgeable to fit it for you.

I've been backing horses for 25+ years, and have always been careful about saddle fit, but I can honestly say none go better and are easier to do than the ones I've backed in treeless.

Sadly, someone will buy this lot thinking they are getting a bargain.
I'm sorry, but I must say this. There is one thing that really makes me angry. That is using 'any old saddle' to train a horse. This is the most important saddle of their life, their first saddle. it gives them their first impression. It is VITAL that such a saddle is fitted correctly.
There is also NO saddle that will adjust to fit all horses.

Steps off soapbox

Ben's Mum is exactly right it is a gallop saddle, Indian made and using Indian tree, Indian metal work and Indian leather, I will leave the rest to your imagination.
I would not put this anywhere NEAR a horse, let alone a youngster, even for getting them used to having the saddle on their back. DON'T is my advice!

Well yes there is, that's why I use Solution treeless saddles, but you do have to know how to fit them to each horse
