Saddle length - how?

I had always thought that you measured a saddle from D-ring to the mid point of the cantle...

If I do this on my new boy's saddle (one he came with) it measures at a whopping 19 inches - which seems crazy as he is only 16hh. If I measure it from midpoint of the pommel to midpoint of the cantle it comes out at 17 inches which seems more reasonable to me.

Have I had it wrong all these years?

You measure from the middle of the cantle to one of the buttons/studs on the pommel. So slightly diagonally.
