Hi all, I recently got a horse again after years of being out of owning, and I have forgotten some small details about what to do in certain scenarios. For instance, bought a new saddle, it definitely fits (I asked several ppl to verify before riding on it). Saddle going great, and then yesterday I take it off, start grooming, and there is a little bit of rubbed hair area on her back. I'm just wearing one basic type numnah on her at the mo, so I think one extra layer would do the trick. But what extra layer is best?? A riser pad, gel pad, fleece numnah pad?? Would appreciate any and all suggestion, thanks!

I personally go for a poly pad saddle pad.If the saddle fits then this will add protection with out raising the saddle up.Id never ride with out some kind of pad under my saddle

You say you have had several people verify the fit of the saddle - but do they include qualified saddle fitters at all?

It is difficult to say what is best to prevent the rubbing, because pads, numnahs etc. all have their benefits if used correctly - but can also have a negative effect.

A riser pad, for instance, needs to be fitted by someone experienced - otherwise by lifting the back of the saddle it could potentially push the front of the saddle down (driving the points of the tree into the shoulder), and tipping the seat forward.

An extra thick numnah makes the saddle narrower and reduces the width of the gullet.

I am not saying these products are aways bad things - used correctly, riser pads and other products do have many benefits - but before doing anything yourself, may I suggest you get the advice of a qualified saddle fitter regarding what to use.

Hi KatB, no, the numnah had not moved. The rubbed bit (essentially a small patch of rougher hair) was past the withers on the left side in the slight groov area. If you know what I mean? I suck at describing stuff! Don't ask me for directions anywhere either!

Thanks for the suggestion Happy Go Lucky. Will definitely consider the polly pad. Any other suggestions out there?? I'm a girl who loves lots of options when solving something

I would echo this advice. I've had my current saddle checked by two or three "saddler fitters" who all said it was a good fit yet when I took it to a well known, experienced and QUALIFIED saddle fitter, he said it was too wide!!
