bringing a horse into work again after 6 months of field rest. He has lost a lot of condition and muscle so the saddle doesn't fit as well anymore. I think I need to add a saddle pad - but which type should I go for? Sheepskin half pad, Prolite pad...? Any thoughts?

Take a look at the Suber pads and if you do want to buy one go direct to David Ahn as he sells for £65 inc P&P rather than the £90 odd that online retailers will charge

From past experiance i would say Mark todd Acupressure numnah. Its fantastic for horses that are just this or suffer with sore backs from time to time.

Prolite.

My saddler fitted my jumping saddle with a Prolite underneath just to raise it all up a bit more off his back. I don't have a problem with using pads and TBH don't believe in made to measure saddles unless you have a horse who is really tricky to fit. My horse has more muscle on one side than the other so the pad has an extra pad in one side to even it up. Saddler says that with time and the right work, she expects to be able to take pads out and eventually do away with the Prolite altogether.

Have a look at Shires Comfort Pad. They are exactly the same as prolite (have both!) with a slightly thicker front (donesn't say that on the ads though) so fill in hollows well. And a quarter of the price!

They're perfect for if your horse looses weight or muscle and buying a new narrower saddle isn't an option. It also allows the back to fill out without restriction.
