My old boy's back has lost muscle while he was being a field ornament and, even though he seems to find his saddle comfortable and he has no problem rounding up in it, I am worried it may eventually hurt him as it seems to bridge very slightly (dirt mark on numnah fades in the middle). Can anybody recommend a purpose made pad please? I have looked at the Acavallo middle riser gel pad and my only worry is whether it might alter the fit of the saddle and make it narrower. Does anybody use any Acavallo gel pad and has it altered the fit of your saddle?

Even a basic shim pad could help just shim the middle so it's not bridging, I have one with a slightly dipped back and I just use a shim numnah. Mine are nuumed

I use a Prolite pad, the one with the shims in all three sections. The horse is lacking in muscle and I don’t think there’s a saddle out there to fit currently without one. I like it because I can reduce the shims as needed. My horses back is much better when she’s not carrying too much weight, so also something to bare in mind.

Thank you all. I have ordered the Prolite Tri pad thin. Hopefully it will be a temporary measure. I am mostly leading at the moment and hopping on for the odd ten minutes. We have a few wrinkles to iron out, like getting his bare feet work worthy again and persuading him he has seen cows and road signs before. All good fun.
