Saddle racks - whats best?

What is the best design of rack for storing treed saddles?

I have the stand type with 3 straight bars along the length, or the metal wall-mounted ones which sort of flare out at the cantle end. Both are heavily padded with wool blankets and sheepskin to protect the panels. The saddles are used frequently (most days) but have been recently reflocked so are still in the 'bedding-in' stage, hence wanting to store 'em in the best possible way.

(I'd love a proper wooden saddle horse but funds don't permit!!)

A tip someone on this forum mentioned was to get the pipe insulation and use it to cover the metal saddle rack - I am no blue peter expert but I managed to make one! I would be interested in any other suggestions you get as I am looking for saddle storage solutions too.

I've got a Stubbs Saddle Mate. My saddler advised me to get a saddle rack with as large a surface area as possible.

Having spent a FORTUNE having mine re-flocked, I was told by the saddler to put the saddle on a single pole so the panels are not resting on anything.

There is no doubt some of the metal racks are totally wrong, in that the saddle sits on them and it leaves marks underneath, I have put a thick numnah under mine. I would rather make one out of wood, so the saddle rests on the wood and there is no pressure point.
The angle should be such that the saddle sits perfectly.

I had a wooden one made for my western otherwise i use the standard one for my english saddle

Totally agree - either have a minimal saddle rack - ie a plain pole that will sit in the channel or one wide enough to allow the whole underside to sit on it.

The metal bar type brackets cause the packing to compress where the saddle lies against the bars.
