Hi, I have a Dartmoor pony 11.3hh that is quite fat with a table top back! Does anyone else have a pony with a similar shape, but have found a saddle that fits nicely?

He came from a rescue early last winter and he arrived very fat, but over the rest of the winter he dropped the summer fat and became quite a nice shape again. However, throughout the summer with the heatwave we experienced I had to feed my horses hay everyday as they were living out and now I'm back to square one!

Andrea Hicks Native Pony saddles are nice for round ones if you want a normal treed saddle.
For a cheaper option, I like saddle pads on round ponies, and have used the Zoe Snape and the Thorn ones. They tend to stay put very well. They allow for changes in shape. Non-slip numnahs and girths also help. I like the pro choice girths.

Thank you very much for your response. I will have a look into all your suggestions. I have never ridden in a saddle pad before although this is for my 8 year old daughter so will look into them as well. :-)

I fit for AH so can answer any questions if you have any :), though I'd recommend against sticky pads, they can really irritate the fascia and can disguise fitting issues.

The pads are great for children. My daughter did everything in hers on her 10.2 Shetland, and then we used it in her 12.2 aswell. She did all pony club activities in it. That was a Zoe Snape. A friend uses thorn pads on her Fells. I like the non slip pads and never had any back problems with the ponies, I guess it helped that they had a tiny person on top of them though! Although, friend is not tiny, and reports no issues with hers...

Sadly a brand new leather saddle is not an option for me at the moment, but thank you for taking the time to comment x
