I don't know what your budget is, but I like Ideal saddles. I had a VSD event for some yrs which was great. Now have an Ideal Jessica. I think they are excellent quality and reasonably priced.
i havent had many gp saddles..well many saddles at all really! i did like the hkieffer garmish AT lovely and comfy.
i know you may think i and others keep harping on, but have you considered a wow? the you could have gp flaps for now and then invest in some dressage ones later, as well as having full adjustability as he changes shape..just a consideration
Frank Baines Eclipse GP - I bought mine with Ali (fits him perfectly), the most comfortable saddle I have ever ridden in. I use it for hacking out, flatwork, and jumping and it's honestly a brilliant saddle, by far the best GP out there.
Fran - I can't afford a Wow, I just don't have a grand to spend on a saddle. Realistically the most I can afford will be around the £700 mark - and even then I would prefer to buy second hand to get the price down again.
He's currently being ridden in a a Bates Caprilli - which is very comfortable, and has interchangeable gullets. I'm just not 100% happy with the fit on him. I like it because it is so light because of the cair system.
Ideal's too heavy, don't know anything about Black Country saddles - but wouldn't mind seeing an Albion or a Jeffries on him.
Saddler reckons Ideal and Barnsby are the best saddles for a horses back. Albions are lovely saddles, but have only very recently changed their tree form the old fashioned long point version, so if you do get one, make sure you get one with short points, I think the WB trees have them, but because they are newer saddles, they are more expensive. Seriously Barnsby saddles are lovely, and if I was in the market for a new one, would be looking at theirs.
Yes they do. Look on TDS website at the different sizing on Albions. K2 models always to a MM, whereas some of the model only go, M, W etc. Does that make sense?
What width (have you done a wither tracing?) is he? Curved or flat backed at 18th rib? Big shoulders or not? Dipped, roached or normal slope to back from withers back? Forward or normal girth groove?
All of these will affect the choice of make.
For you - do you like narrow, normal or wide twists? A Shorter or longer flap? Big blocks or minimalist? Flat seat or deeper?
I adored my old albion but i had it made for my old mare so that went with her.
I currently have a jeffries VSS (just bought it) and i love it!!! Very comfy and fits Bea fab! I bought the VSS as i intend to invest in a dressage saddle soon (saddle fitter is coming in the morn to check the new one and have a look at some dressage saddles!) I paid 850 for the jeffries new but i think the GP version is cheaper.
