I currently have a saddle that is too narrow for my horse but it also slips quite far to the right on the left rein and slightly left on the right. I am looking at buying a new saddle which is exactly what I have now but wider so that it fits.

Would the saddle slipping be just the fit of the saddle or would it be that it's not the right saddle for my mare? Or a bit of both?

I just didn't want to buy a new saddle and it still slips. Thanks in advance

It could be due to many things, slipping to the outside may be in part due to the rider trying to "hold" the horse out if it does not move away from the inside leg properly, it may be that the tree shape is unsuitable so going wider will not sort out the problem or it could be something physical causing the horse to be unable to move correctly, a poor fitting saddle may cause discomfort and stop correct movement to a degree.

You really need a saddle fitter to advise you, they don't all try to sell you the most expensive saddle, let them know your budget in advance, some will carry a good stock of second hand ones for you to try, mine came recently to fit a saddle for a livery, the 2 that fitted best were not the most expensive and the one she is probably going to buy was probably the least expensive of the lot.

Doesnt have to be new or really expensive to fit properly. Research your area, and get qualified saddle fitter. It will make all the difference for your horse and you.
