I need some tips for keeping a saddle in place on my very flat back, round pony. He has absolutely no withers and my saddle is just slipping.

I've just bought him a new wide synthetic saddle so its nice and light - and fits absolutely fine but it still slips!! Breast plates / other gadgets are out as we're doing a dressage test in it on Sunday!

I've got a thick non elasticated girth, which i fasten on the point strap and the other furthest strap which helps a bit, and someone suggested trying a chamois leather to help stop slipping.

Any other tips???

my friend has a horse whose saddle slips-her saddler reccomended the barsnsby grip pad to use as a numnah-quite expensive at £60 but it works with her horse-also you can use abreastplate for dressage provided it does not have a martingale attachement

Oh I dodn't know that about the breast plate - thats good news. Might give that a go.

Someone else suggested some non slip matting stuff you can buy from halfords?

If I do get a non slip pad, does it go directly on his back, with a saddle cloth on and then the saddle, or do you just use the pad?

if you go on the barnsby website you can see it on there! it is a numnah with a padding on top to support the saddle and on the underside there is a rubbery type mesh which seems to stop the slipping-you can either get a numnah or saddlecloth-she has the cloth-works for her horse-a big moving freisian!!

Yes, a piece of chamois leather (the real stuff, not the fake stuff with holes in it

) - you can get it from any car accessories place, or online. I buy large pieces online, a few quid for a 4' square piece, which I then cut smaller. Just lay it over the withers underneath everything else and it moulds to the horse's shape as it warms up and works brilliantly.
