Ok, so in preparation for this summer I decided to fork out and get a new saddle for my mare (having only ever had hand me downs and cast offs, fitted of course) I had a new one properly fitted, fits my mare like a glove and during my test ride was very very happy with it.

The problem is that since then I have noticed that my seat bones don't quite fit in the seat, almost seem to sitveither side, and over time it feels like my pelvis is spreading and its really quite painful! I am not a particularly large rider, and my horse isn't particularly narrow and I have never had this problem before. It's actually very uncomfortable after a short ride, and I dread to think what it will be like as fitness picks up and we go out further. I have now had it a month and ridden in it a few times so no chance of a return or exchange so would have to sell second hand and take a loss if I decided to change (obviously I would do that if need be) and also would need to find something else that fits my mare as well as this one does.

Has anyone else every had this problem? Is it something that I can fix with riding exercises or a seat saver or do I need to suck up the cost and get rid and buy something else that suits my 'conformation' as well as my horse?

Eagerly await replies!

I feel your pain!!! I am a small'ish' rider 5ft4", 9 stone 2, (whoop!). I rode a friends very wide cob the other day and was in agony! my seat bones seemed to need to be one side or the other. Really hard to explain unless you've experienced it. I kept getting bad cramp in the top of my bum/hip & had to get off twice in a half hour lesson :o

So can't help you other than say 'I feel your pain'! x

I think this can happen if the tree has been designed for a mans pelvis which is smaller than a ladies. I had a saddle like this I sold it and got a new one which I dont get this feeling xx

Yeah I think its the width of the 'twist' but I am not sure if it has a narrow or wide twist from what you describe. I always prefer narrow but I am a tall wide person!

That's why I love my Jeremy rudge fusion. It fits my xxxxw boy but the way the tree and seat is designed it does not feel that wide when you are sat on it; unlike other makes I tried. Yes it was not cheap but well worth it.

Sorry to interrupt but can i just say Kirristam - thank you for posting that link i have found it really interesting.

As a fitter I have a different experience from the one in the Schleese video linked to - every rider is different and every single once likes different things about saddles. I suspect it is not about twist, you're talking about your seatbones and twist affects your crotch :o. I think the seat may be too narrow for you so your seatbones are slipping off each side. I like a medium to wide twist and wide seat and find that a narrow seat makes my coccyx sore over time.

Is your saddle still in immaculate condition? Call your fitter and have an honest chat with them, hopefully they will offer you a really good trade in price to get something better that suits you. You have a 7 day trial on ANY saddle sold to you away from the fitter's premises so do make sure you give any new saddle a really good work out :)

Do you know of anyone with a Heather Moffat seat saver that you could borrow to see if that helps? They are designed for the female shape and I have to say they are VERY comfortable! If you can't borrow I would buy one, they are very popular and you would have no trouble re-selling it.
