I have been contacted about a 16 1/2 in kent and masters pony saddle someone has for sale.
She has sent me photos, and it looks fab.. Apart from one photo of the saddles stamp (a stamp on metal) which says '16 PO'

Does this mean the saddle is, what she says, 16 1/2' or she has it wrong, and its 16'?

I only need a 16 1/2' so will not be interested if its a 16'.. she seems very genuine, but confused on the saddle stamp!

Thanks!

I don't know what the PO means, but I would be hugely surpised if you could feel a difference of 1/2 an inch. Many saddle manufacturers make the 1/2 inch difference by moving the button...

Thank you, I thought that myself, But I tried a 16' saddle and I only just fitted my bum in it (I'm 5'4 and 8 stone) but in a 16 1/2' it was much more comfortable, so my saddle fitter has asked me to look out for a 16 1/2 only as I will not fit in the 16'!
I really hope its a 16'!

Thanks Again

Ask her to send you a photograph showing a measuring tape or ruler against the saddle, from the stud to the centre of the back of the cantle. Then you'll know what size it actually is rather than what it claims to be.

THIS is a far more accurate way to measure, ignore what's on bars, sweat flaps or labels, always measure a saddle yourself to be sure as when we make saddles as we web the trees up it's our judgement to make it the correct size but can often be out by over 1/2" if we make a 17" saddle we'd need a 17 1/2" tree to allow for pulling it up when webbing the tree up, so, always measure it and don't go on manufacturer's labels etc, hope this helps, Oz :)

Agree with Ox. There is another factor though, and that is that in some models there is an original tree size, then extra is added to the cantle, so sometimes your horse will be able to take a bigger size than expected as the panel underneath matches the original tree size. Bear in mind the extended cantle may go outwards, giving you more room on a flatter seat, or more upwards, making a seat deeper and it actually won't ride any bigger, just be more supportive.

In a production line saddle like a Thorowgood this will not have happened, but it might occasionally be true of a bench made leather saddle.
