I am looking at a few saddles on ebay. Baron currently has a wintec 500 with a medium gullet in it. Now I was wondering if there is a lot of difference in a Medium and medium/wide? My instrutor had a look at his current saddle and said it is just about wide enough. But I am thinking with him being high withered if I got a m/w and it was a bit too wide then it would be too low on his witheres.

I am looking at getting him a leather saddle for use at shows and competitions, if I went for a m/w and it was a little too wide would the saddler be able to make it fit? I dont want to buy one from the saddlers unless I have to as tbh im looking for a bargain as it will only be used for competing so dont want to spend the earth.

You need to be looking for something said to be suitable for a warmblood..wider, but accomodating a wither too. Measure from D ring to D ring to have an idea of which will fit, this is the guide mostly used on eBay

i would personally stick with the synthetic as tou can easily change the gullet. you dont want to buy a leather one and then him change shape. also i'm not changing the saddle just for competitions as surely the sadlle will fit differently to the normal one and he will notice this?
i saddler could only change if to a certain extent with restuffing so be careful. some sadderies have plenty of decent second hand saddleswhich they can come and check the fit of? you could try that?

If you want a leather saddle & have it adjustable like the one you already have give some thought to a Bates, a quality leather saddle, comfortable to rude in & the gullet width can be changed in 5 minutes by installing a different gullet whic cost about £15 from saddlers (less on ebay).
