Hi All,

I had a second hand equipe fitted to my 6 year old mare that was a medium but previous owner had it adjusted to a M+1. I had this fitted last March and was slightly too wide at the time, but we knew she had a lot of muscling up to do and needed to put on some condition, therefore we put a sheepskin pad underneath. Come the summer we took the pad away and fitted well.. looking back i can see some small movement at the back the saddle. In November i noted some movement in the saddle so had the saddle fitter back out again and the saddler noted that the mare's withers had definitely come up and she had narrowed off . We put the sheepskin pad underneath with some sim inserts, however come January i noted some minor rub marks/slight hair loss on to equal patches under the back of the saddle.
Saddle fitter came out today and confirmed still too wide and she hasnt seen any improvement in the fit... we had hoped she she may come up again in the shoulders to fill it out. we tried a M on her and it fitted really well. However i worry that within the year i will be looking to sell this saddle and going back to the M+1.

Is this just the scenario that all people with horses in that final maturing stage go through and i need to accept that i may go down to the M to fit the horse now, however need to be aware that i may be selling it again soon after? Or do, i stick with the M+1 with a pad and wait until spring to see how her shape is after winter.
One thing i would say is that she had very much developed a great topline from when i first got her and she is naturally a slender horse. if she was a human, she would always be shopping in the "petite" section.

i know equipe's hold their value so i know if bought a new one in an M i wouldnt loose too much money if i did have to sell it in the future and buy a M+1.

Shimming for a wither popping up isn't always successful. I'm not a big fan of this style of saddle (check out the thread on close contact saddles that started last week), it may work for her in a better width but usually you need a different shaped tree for a horse that has popped up a wither.

Horses can change in weeks, even if not young and growing, I would have the very best fit for her, if she's not developed muscle into a wider saddle within a few weeks/months, it may not be the best option for her. Equally it's always a complex picture, without being hands on it's impossible to say, but yes, it's possible to buy and sell and make money and I always advise a good second hand saddle for young horses where possible, for that reason.

Thanks Sbloom. you talk a lot of sense. i do want the very best fit for her and if that means i need to PX again within the year then ok. So in terms of the trees .. we tried a range of different style and at the time back in march, it was the Equipe expression or the Carbon tree version that suited her . My saddler was very good yesterday and said do not buy her the carbon tree at this point as they are very expensive to adjust in comparison to the expression. I asked about the other tree designs and she said that the other trees would not suit her shape .

There are a lot of second hand Equipe's out there so I imagine you could sell yours and buy another second hand without spending much. Then resell again later.

Just be sure that the M actually works for her. Equipe's don't work for my horse for a few reasons. One is that he is built very uphill with a tall long withers. The Equipe, no matter the tree size, does not have enough room in the front. Then, the panel behind is too slim - no thick gusset. So I would pay attention to that as well.

I've seen it where people try to bring the front of the saddle down because it is sitting tipped to the back, but then it is too wide and all sorts of shims are tried.

If the M truly does work just fine, then I would pick one up second hand. Maybe just keep the one you already have too?

Thanks CC. Yes, unfortunately my saddler had none second hand so am awaiting for her offer for a new one. I was also considering keeping my MW, just incase, however, i would have liked to upgrade the saddle at some point anyway as is it is an older version.

There will be plenty of other options beside Equipe, as I say, do have a look at the post on close contact saddles for a discussion of them. To me they're too tight in the twist, in that thread I link to some brilliant research on twist width.

OP - I so sympathise - finding a saddle to fit your horse is like wading thru treacle. In my not so vast experience, if she hasn't muscled up as a 6 year old, the saddle doesn't fit properly. Mine got wider between 4 and 6 years and got wider still until they were 8. If yours is showing signs of rub marks and is losing topline then I would try another saddle type. Be alert to changes in behaviour too.
