I am 5ft 2" and have the calves of a rugby player (about 16" diameter) so I find it extremely difficult to find fitting long riding boots.
I recently won a pair of brand new Mark Todd long riding boots short wide fit, for very little on EBay. I really crossed my fingers that they would fit but alas, I can't get the zipper up at all!
I really love the style of the boots, so instead of selling them on I was recommended to try and find a saddler to fit elastic gussets in the back of the boot to allow them to fit.
Does anyone have a clue if a saddler would do this and if so what ballpark amount would I be looking at?

Alternatively, if anyone knows of a good long boot that would fit please let me know!

I don't know about the saddler but we have a great cobbler near us that could do that in a heartbeat. From past experience not all cobblers are great though so I'd recommend posting on your local horsey Facebook page for recommendations first.

I'm sure it could be done but may not look great.
My solution was to buy wide leg leather gaiters, easier to replace short boots when they wear out and try to look after the gaiters.

Ooh you are local to me. Who would you recommend? I'd recommend Ted at Woldingham Saddlery.

I always take my boots to Midhurst Shoe & Leather repairs next to the Texaco garage. Nigel did a fab job of adjusting 2 pairs of konigs now and the zips he put in are still going strong two years later!

I agree with this, though we also have a local saddler who would do this sort of job too...

I had some too tight, no zip boots and got them stretched.
It was years ago so not sure of the cost but remember being pleasantly surprised it wasn't more!

I do have some leather gaiters, they are a touch too wide (for once!) but they don't look as smart! :(

I'm a saddler and have done them, fiddly though, when I was up in Caterham still I did several. Either a local saddler or a traditional cobbler will be able to do it, Oz

Thanks Oz, what do you think would be a fair price for the job. Just wondering if its worth getting it done or selling them on and investing in a pair of wider boots :)

It's ages since I have done any, not since I have been in Wales anyway, Think I charged 20 quid for the pair but as I said it was ages ago. Each saddler has his/her own idea of pricing and also if they have access to the right machine to make it easy to do, if he/she has to hand stitch them in then far more expensive, Oz
