Is there any make of saddle generally that fits a high withered TB - that isn't too expensive - is it a case of trial and error?

I tried and tried and the only one I could find that I could get with thick enough panels so the saddle cleared the withers was a WOW saddle with extra foam inserts in the panels. The guy at the factory knew exactly what the problem was and sorted it. To do this cheaply would mean buying a second hand saddle and getting new panels made.

Sadly my high withered horse has been out of work now for 18months so her saddle is being sold on ebay but it is very new and (I hope) will not go cheaply!!

Look at Balance International. Their system is the best for any horse and although their own saddles are not cheap, they are willing to you use a synthetic saddle to do a similar job - there is a piece about it on their downloads page, I think in the bit on FAQ's.

Bates fits my tb perfectly but I have another nearly new cliff barnsby that was bought for my old tb that wont go any where near new horse.

Thorowgood high wither saddles are very good- they have a deep panel and deep rear gussets that most TBs need in order for the saddle to clear the spine. Many saddles just dont have a deep enough panel. New they are about £375

A race exercise saddle fits most.......Not to comfortable for the rider though.....but my jockey is being asked to re-school our pointer as an eventer, and he is kicking up a huge fuss in being asked to ride it in a GP!!

Balance are fab! Having seen the results I'd never use anything else again. We've used then on a high withered TB (ex-racer with quite a lot of muscle wastage) and an ISH with fairly high withers. Both of them are finally bulking up their back muscles, and the difference is hugely noticable in the ISH, as she's the mosst established- the power that she has since we changed her saddle is incredible, she moves bigger and better, and has much more scope- in essence she's a different horse to ride!

Basically, I'd recommend them to anyone.

My ex race horse has withers like mt everest lol When I bought his saddle, i popped down to Peter Wilkinson's (Fylde Saddlery) where ive always bought my show saddles from. Due to the number of race horses now coming into the show ring, he now sells saddles which cater for TBs especially those off the track. They are fantastic for high withered horses, and even have the extra panels to help it fit where there has been muscle wastage due to racing. Mine fits my horse like a glove, and wasnt too epensive, just over 800quid with girth, leathers and irons....hope this helps xxx

high witherered horses (not just tbs) often require police points which are longer than normal saddles! work in a pessoa or similar will adjust the back muscles to a more normal fit, and continued work on the long low and round basis will strenthen the back muscles! and the amount of weight they carry(their own fat not the riders) all tribute to the saddle fit! get a good saddle fitter, buy a flock filled saddle which can be adjusted, and be prepared to have to change your saddle! (as horse gains weight and muscle bulk), and try to keep at a constant weight! often hard with a tb as they can drop a lot of condition in winter when grass is not around!

I have just bought my TB a Thorowgood HW GP tried it on him today and he went great in it fingers crossed it lasts, plus it so much more comfortable for me and I felt I sat better in it too.
