I have been looking at various different saddles recently to get my young horse. I currently use an Ideal VSD as its one we had when we broke him in that fitted him, but really it looks too small on him now. Plus i cant really shorten my stirrups that much as i have quite a long leg and they tend to poke off the front. It is a lovely little saddle and for the time being it will do, but I will soon want something that fits him and i better. I have been looking at various makes – Ideal, Jeffries and also Kent and Masters. I want something that fits us both, looks nice, is comfortable to hack and do flatwork in but at the same time i will be able to shorten my stirrups up enough to jump. I used to have an Ideal International Event on my other horse and this did that job lovely. The Ideal Grandee and Monarch Professional look similar to the Int Event – has anyone got these? If so what are they like and are they good for jumping? He is only young so i wont be doing too big a jumps in the near future but i want something that will at least do the job for a few years. Any thoughts and ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you.

How old is he? If he's as young as your post suggests you will be very lucky if you find one that will last a few years - I have gone through
cheap synthetic backing saddle
black country GP
lovatt and rickets GP
locatt and rickets VSD
farrington event

All since my boy was backed - he's not 6 til this summer! He has changed massively every season, and gone up almost 3 inches in last 2 years.
Have to say my favourite to ride in has been the farrington which we have atm but not entirely sure it still fits - saddler booked for in a couple of weeks time.

If budget allows I am told ideal are good as pretty adjustable for saddle that doesn't have changeable gullet?

Thanks. I have thought that by this time next year he may need a different one, but he is quite mature already - quite strapping for a 4 year old. But we shall see. Thank you for your input.

Mine was already the height he was supposed to make at adulthood by the time he turned 4.... Ended up almost 3 inches bigger than his dad and 2 inches bigger than mum!
There are loads of second hand saddles out there though for some good prices, I decided to go with second hand leather rather than wintec adjustable although both did fit, as I knew we would be lucky to get a year's use out of it and I was likely to get a better resale value on the leather gp.
