As title really chow do you know they are right for your own bum size.

And how much does it affect your riding?

I ride at a school so try out lots of different sizes. Some are comfy, Some aren't, some I swim around in but they never feel too small. Hoe can you tell what's right fir you?

I just go for what seems to support me in the correct position for the discipline. For example I find my stubben with big blocks is fab for jumping but I'd struggle doing dressage in it as I have limited leg movement. I like to be able to fit my hand sideways on behind my bum on the seat to see I have enough space, and be sat in the deepest part of the saddle without being tipped backwards or forwards. Mostly it is just if I feel balanced and in tune with the horse in all movements. Obviously having a bit of cushioning rather than a rock hard seat is comfier and I personally like a sprung seat as my horse is fairly bouncy.

ETA: saddles are very important to my riding and confidence particularly whilst jumping on the basis of security, my stubben has saved me from eating dirt many times!

Same as Cyber horse has said, when fitting saddles, amongst other things I like to be able to see the flat of my hand (palm width) between the rider's backside and the end of the seat at the cantle and NO it's not just an excuse to shove my hand up their backside to find out if it fits!
Their knees should be central on the front of the saddle flap and not over hang either on the front of the flap or their thigh off the rear of the flap.
The twist of the saddle should feel comfortable and not force the riders legs too far apart so as to be uncomfortable, the rider really is the best judge for that!
Oz :)
